Meta joining the fediverse:✅ Access to a ton of free and diverse content, without having to deal with the legal responsibilities of hosting it or platforming problematic people✅ Skirts antitrust legislation by pointing to the freedom of users to migrate elsewhere, "it's an open network"✅ Meta users still get to enjoy having their data exploited and eyeballs monetized✅ We get to interact with them from Mastodon without getting our data exploited and eyeballs monetizedWin for everyone.

@Nour Exactly. The hall monitor #Fediverse admins are just mad about #Threads because they fear that they will lose the vice grip of power they have meticulously gained over the past few years, and because #Meta is an objectively evil company, it’s easy to sugarcoat that animosity with moralism.

@realcaseyrollins That is true. Things aren't always black or white. Our interests don't necessarily have to be at odds with Meta – we can both benefit at the same time. It's a symbiotic relationship. Meta will not back out on federation; it's their main goal, front and center on Threads, and will guarantee the death of Twitter. If they don't (won't happen), they'll have a huge monopoly over the social space (4 platforms) and will almost certainly be broken up by regulators.

@lnxw37b2 The only objectionable harm that can come to the #Fediverse from #Threads–and some are beginning to recognize this– is overwhelming networks with a high volume of network traffic.Whether or not #Meta is evil because there’s extremely little #Meta can force the #Fediverse to do. And it evil is the concern we have instances that support pedophilia and loli as well as outright violence so a claim could easily be made that the #Fediverse has isntances more evil than #Meta already, at least when it comes to brazen acceptable of immoral values and content.

@lnxw37b2 Advertising is inconvenient, but not a threat in any way.Does your instance’s software have built-in spam suppression? This is all part of the network traffic influx that I’m saying small instances are not ready for.Automated filters against “illegal content”?#Threads has illegal content?Does it force users’ posts and profiles to be non-public by default? Why would you want it to do that?Does your instance’s software have portable accounts & universal account identifiers? Interfaces to #Tor, #I2P ? Remote file storage on #IPFS and similar content-identified file hosting? These are some interesting questions, although I’m not sure how they relate to #Threads. FTR, #Tor works with #Mastodon at least, I am not sure about the rest.
