       The world is a darker place today. My dear friend Susan died yesterday from cancer. It came on quickly, and she was in intense pain for the past few weeks. I did get to see her one last time yesterday afternoon, and it was heart-wrenching. Susan was a sweet, loving soul who probably had about a thousand best friends. If you asked her, she’d say in all sincerity, “They’re all my best friends.”  We bonded over books and opera and France and politics. She loved to cook and bake. She made you happy.
