How did the Final Fantasy 7 remake get so much praise? Combat is such a step down from the original’s turn based, side quests are the worst I’ve seen in a game since AC Odysee, making you re tread the same 5 areas. I’m getting strong Dragon Age 2 vibes from this combat and side quests.Nostalgia factor is great, it looks cool, but man it doesn’t play well.

@thelinuxEXP I mostly like the combat. It's definitely not the same type of game, but to call it a step down isn't fully fair either. Does Civ 5 or Dark Souls have better combat? They aren't comparable.However, I played Crisis Core right before playing FF7 remake, and CC is a far better representation of what the live action combat could be. FF7 is not as good.Try Crisis Core. Maybe you find the new combat isn't for you, or maybe CC will at least illuminate what they were TRYING to do.

@nbisby Yes, Dark Souls has better combat. The new combat system is weird, half real time had paused to issue commands, enemies have too much health for a hack and slash, and there aren’t really many combos or interesting things happening.Divide enemy health by 3 and maybe it’s ok. In its current implementation, it feels way inferior to the older turn based system!

@thelinuxEXP Ok Civ vs Dark Souls isn't a fair comparison.X-Com vs Dark Souls. You can have an opinion on which you prefer, but you can't objectively say one "is better".The way I played FF7 remake, it felt very similar to original FF7, except instead of waiting for ATB to fill, you still have other button mashing to do. Dodges are based on actual positioning to a degree instead of just luck.Not flawless, not for everyone. But for an overhaul of FF7 as an action game, it was pretty good.

@thelinuxEXPI personally prefer the new real-time action system - it makes each character play uniquely.The remake project in general was clearly set up a 2 part project - first part, get the combat systems and other gameplay mechanics in place in a small space (Midgar), part 2, add the rest of the story. The story is long enough that they broke part 2 into 2 parts, but the development methodology applies.

@thelinuxEXP Square has convinced itself that turn based combat doesn't sell and has been trying (unsuccessfully) for years now to create a hybrid system that merges action and turn based systems.Needless to say it would be best if they just decided to go all out for one or the other, I do believe there is space for innovation on a traditional turn based JRPG.

Started playing the remake not too long ago. It's not bad, but the original is definitely significantly better.Got the game when it was on sale, it's not worth it at the full price.Not going to play the sequels of the remake.Getting a PS1 or PS2 with the original game and a CRT costs about as much as the first part of the remake if you're lucky, so I recommend getting that instead lol
