Can anyone recommend a small single-board computer for me?I need it to have :a) processing power and RAM comparable to an Atom-processor netbook built for 32-bit Windows XP, and b) an Ethernet port, andc) a couple of USB ports, andd) preferably an HDMI port, although NTSC out is completely OK too, ande) hardware compatibility with 32-bit Slackware.A key consideration : it should be readily available in the USA.

@publius I've only been playing with ARM SBCs, but the UDOO x86 II Ultra (https://shop.udoo.org/en/udoo-x86-ii-ultra.html) and the Odyssey X86J4105 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/seeed/odyssey-x86j4105-x86j4125-series-sbc) both look to meet most of those (idk about Slackware, but you should be able to install to a microsd from another machine). They're quite beefy but not crazy expensive.

@publius I did some more poking around. Maybe UP has what you're looking for? https://up-shop.org/default/up-board-series.htmlThe ODROID-H3 was the weakest ODROID still makes: https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h3/

@publius Might a Raspberry Pi 4 do? Not sure if it's fast enough. They were very hard to come by (at reasonable prices) until recently. Available with up to 8GB RAM (though I don't know if you need to use a 64-bit OS for that). Slackware says it works on Pi4. Of course, it uses ARMs, so won't run x86 programs.Mine isn't great as a Web-browser because, if I run Chromium or Firefox, it has a habit of nearly grinding to a halt sometimes.

@publius (cont.) 'Everybody' else says "works fine for me" 😕 It might be cos I've only got 2GB RAM, or it might bethe SD card. Maybe use an SSD?

@publius I would recommend an ARM single-board computer. I like the ones from pine64.org, the ROCK64 might be what you are looking for. There is also the Orange Pi, which you can get from AliExpress.

@publius If you are on a budget.get a mini pc with a Celeron N3350 chip set. Cost you around 200 for starters. You only need to add elkhartlake to the module blacklist for now.

@marbles @publius RAM and storage are the main things. 2G is probably not enough for a modern web browser (certainly not for Chrome, for instance), so the machine will be swapping a lot. If the SD card is slow, that means you get penalized twice.I use a USB hard drive on mine, performance is actually not bad.

@bentsukun @marbles I'm not planning to run a Web browser or anything of the kind. In fact it's not going to be connected to the Internet ― directly connected to an ATA and running Asterisk.Since the setup currently works perfectly on a Toshiba NB205 with a 32-bit Atom processor and 1.5 GB of RAM (and a "built for Windows XP" label), I know it doesn't need heavy artillery. And I'd be compiling for source, so as long as there's hardware support, it's all OK.

@publius Intel NUC are my go to machines these days when I need a small footprint.Being the Slackware fanatic that I am, I have never had an issue installing my favourite OS on them, though the 32 bit compatibility can be tricky to setup. Look into the lowest priced models, you may even find Atom based model.Take a look at the Intel NUC11ATKPE0002 - sold here for about 250euros w/o SSD or RAM.
