> One of the biggest Cohesion Policy-funded projects, the Brăila bridge in Romania, is inaugurated today.looking at a map, i am mildly confused about the point of this (very impressive ofc) bridge

@pony more capacity for container lorries and other vehicles (hopefully removing them from other smaller roads) and a better transport link to the ports. In my town (40+ years ago) the Orwell Bridge was built for a similar reason (and every time it is closed due to traffic incidents, whole town is gridlocked)https://www.romania-insider.com/braila-bridge-danube-inaugurated-romania-2023

@vfrmedia yeah but like no, there is hardly anything on that side of danube north of constanta (which already has bridges) apart from some villages, primarily because historically there was no bridge over danube, there are also no ports because the coast is a swamp made of the danube delta, you can't build a port there

@pony we did exactly the same over here when we were in EU, especially in "deprived coastal areas" (I live near one), hence why at least half of the fools who voted for Brexit are now finally regretting doing so...

@vfrmedia yeah but uk doesn't really have large isolated parts of the country that were historically not really even part of it (dobruja is like a romanian region with a big asterisk, they only got it "reliably" after the ww2)

@pony its still being built, with 80 km/h limit, and closed at night - its almost as if whoever built it was inspired by the Orwell Bridge (OK its not always closed at night here, but it has been recently due to lorry drivers striking the central reservation)

@DiegoBeghin no just random villages. not even a good black sea port because of the swampy danube delta
