If I wanted to build a NAS, is there like an OS that does a particularly good job?I’d prefer to use either Ubuntu or OpenBSD if either of those are options.

@Jetengineweasel@hackers.town my NAS is a few USB hard drives hanging off my proxmox host (a laptop). the underlying vm running the daemons and such is almalinux and samba. nothing special.use xfs. use llvm. don't do anything wild.

@Jetengineweasel I thought there was one called "OpenNAS" (as in BSD) but searching for that only brings up 900 other open source NAS OS'es

@banjofox2@hackers.town @Jetengineweasel@hackers.town FreeNAS, based on FreeBSD. supposedly a really good distribution but personally i've never had it boot cleanly back when i checked it out, over a decade ago.looks like they've renamed:https://www.truenas.com/freenas/
