@NikaShilobod yes, a fascinating place & a highlight of my trip to Denmark. Still difficult for me to imagine how they could cross the North Atlantic in one of these.

@TrilobyterThere was a replica that came through the Great Lakes from Denmark a while ago. They documented the journey.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%8Dslendingur?wprov=sfla1I think this is the one. There have been a few attempts iirc in these. :)

@Trilobyter Black and white captures the mood nicely. I wonder where they are at moving the museum due to rising sea level?

@NikaShilobod I recall seeing something about that. I like to wonder about the very first ship, say to traverse to Iceland & survive the return & tell others of what they’d found. Was it purely accidental, blown there by a storm say, or was it deliberate, a leap into the void? I was just now reading that there are hints that Irish monks may have gone there first and perhaps the Vikings heard of of it from them, but that still begs the question of what led to the monks’ first traverse.

@TrilobyterI worked up in the Westfjords for a summer and it was wild being two hours away from a gas station. It was honestly probably settled by Norwegians who may have been fleeing conflict or seeking new land to farm. There was a lot of population pressure that was expanding in Scandinavia at that time, probably partially due to good climate.

@Trilobyter We went to that museum quite on a spur of the moment decision and had a wonderful day exploring the museum and the town. 🇦🇺🇩🇰
