But, it seemed about as visually retarded as that manga section was story-wise retarded (esp. compared to the webcomic).The first season will always be one of the best in anime history. The second season…had its moments, good and bad. Not sure how season 3 will be, but they’d need to fix the story to make it worth doing after they get to the surface fights with the Monster Association and Psykos.

@Kleagle @coolboymew It’s not that complicated, they’ve just chosen to do more dynamic camera angles than you’d normally expect from a particular high frame sequence (this is also a good example of why that isn’t usually done, when you put this much budget into a sequence you want people to appreciate the detailed movement and not be distracted by bullshit) but the much bigger problem is that there’s a really unpleasant contrast between the 3D rendered environment and the 2D characters. Even though they have made the 3D environment more stylish than the bare bones it still doesn’t look great, but all these wacky angles keep drawing attention to it. A lot of money for a bad idea.

@moshibar @moshibar @coolboymew The way that the camera tracks is exactly why you are reminded of game CGI animation.They did something cool with this intro to the show, but also failed at executing it in various ways. In some shots, characters are lying down on the ground, standing above the ground, and other oddities. Not enough frames in many shots, especially walking. No textures and overly glossy surfaces. Many problems.Still, it was somewhat enjoyable. It's understandable that a shot like that would require cheap CGI without a multi-million dollar budget and many years of work.

@coolboymew Watched the episode. The anime feels way too overproduced for the tone of the original work, IMO.Komura was never so worshipfully obsessed with her, and there were none of those ambitious “floaty hair” shots. I’ll watch a few more episodes to see if it settles in, but it just feels super tonally dissonant. It’s a cute little SOL with short, snappy chapters, this (in hindsight) feels like they’re trying to pad the runtime with technical spectacle rather than letting the character designs and cute interactions carry it. They also feel too old, they’re supposed to be middle schoolers, but this type of flowery obsession feels like a HS manga. Part of it is Komura sorting out his (granted, positive) feelings for Mie, and this just leaps to him being Komi-style obsessed with her. Again, I love the manga, so I’ll give it a chance, but I’m afraid it’s going to end up being the opposite of Boku no Kokoro, where I was leery initially but loved it. I want to love this, but it just didn’t hit.
