@shoq @kevinporter I keep hearing the excuse that Mastodon is too difficult to use. It's a huge cop-out. It's perpetrated by those who stand to lose control and profit. I'm a 67 year old retiree and I figured it out. Anyone who operates a computer can if they try.

@sellitman @shoq As someone who moved over during one of the first waves back in October/November, the onboarding system needs help. Telling someone they need to pick a server to join without giving them a dumb "I just want an account that works" option is pretty offputting. That said, once you're past that barrier, it's not difficult at all. And it's gotten significantly better even in the last few months. There's a lot of poisoning of the well happening in tech media.

@sellitman @shoq @kevinporter I think the sign up should mention that each server may cater to a particular topic or hobby, and remind people they can visit servers and read the public messages before deciding, and also, you don't need to sign up to just one and you can move if you find one you like better. As for this part of the fediverse, it's very similar in form and function to tw*tter. And some people expect everything, and will never be happy.:blob_disapproval:

@Mayor_of_Smartarse @sellitman @kevinporter I have never believed the “community instance model” would work scale very well. The Lemmy model is much better. People are comfortable joining a small group, topic, or tread, but an entire “community” implies a larger collection of beliefs and interests that most user don’t even think of themselves as having. There are exceptions, of course, but I don’t think that many.
