People say "decentralization doesn't work as good as the centralized facebooks and twitters", but then I post here on highly decentralized Mastodon a silly little joke about the commando character in the old video game Command & Conquer from 1995 and get a response from someone who worked on the original game! .. uh, maybe it is working already? https://infosec.exchange/@codinghorror/110646289254212237

@codinghorror the user experience is definitely bad compared to other social apps. It makes the word of mouth harder to spread. Who wants to share an ugly app with his friends ?

@M3hdibkrf @codinghorror but there are already great third party apps @IceCubesApp to name a one

I guess the plausible counter argument is, "that's because it's all old people who are computer geeks!" and you know what? I'm ok with that. As long as we are federated with many other types of groups, too. That's the point.

@codinghorror a few months ago, someone lost contact with a relative in Ukraine and asked for help. I boosted it and someone in Ukraine helped track down the person and get them in contact. It’s clearly just not working, right?

@SlicerDicer was driving across the country and became stranded in the middle of Tennessee when his truck broke down at like 2am, tweeted about needing a diesel mechanic, and a mechanic who was like a mile away saw the tweet show up in his feed, responded, and met in person to repair the truckThat kind of thing will never happen here, because this network can never provide those types of connections. We don't even have the capability of browsing the posts of local users in your geographical area which is something 3rd party Twitter apps provided because there's GPS metadata in (some? all?) tweets. I used to do that all the time to see who was nearby.

@codinghorror the thing I miss the most about "early" Internet social stuff (forums, blogs, freaking webrings) is that almost everyone involved was super geeky, a bit out there, and thus valued their communities. This might be a bit exclusionist but I think that's the element that's missing in big, centralized social media. I don't want reach, I want depth, and that seems better in smaller groups.

@zeh @codinghorror This place is different because it requires a little effort to be here. It's like walking into a coffee shop vs. drive through Starbucks. Because of that, you get a different type of person.

@pecet @codinghorror not talking about me, I'm satisfied with third party apps but the majority of people don't know what a third party app is.

@feld @SlicerDicer @codinghorror @jerry I didn’t know that was a thing on Twitter. What’s the app called? Is it dead now with the Twitter API charges?

It was something you could do on Tweetbot as far back as 2012, they mention it in this review: > The big addition in Tweetbot’s new search interface is support for nearby tweets. Here, you can view nearby tweets with the ability to change your location (just tap on the embedded Google Map), and you can perform location-based keyword searches for tweets containing specific words that also happen to be located near you.https://www.macstories.net/reviews/tweetbot-2-4-brings-new-search-view-keyword-mute-filters-refinements/API docs:https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/tutorials/advanced-filtering-for-geo-data

@feld @SlicerDicer Yeah that was amazing Twitter was my go to. It actually makes me sad. Many people I talked with just vanished. Good people. I made many friends on there. Wish I knew what happened to one of them. I know he had diabetes. I have his phone number and all. Just gone :( That’s the only sad part about all that. You might not ever meet them. Then even if you do we are all so isolating? It can just be the person vanished.
