@adam they put vacuum tubes in 19" racks 100 years ago. the first video tape recorders had about six or seven racks of tubes with a tape deck on one of them for those wagon wheel 2" wide video tapes.

@not_br549 @adam I can't tell from this blurry picture. But this might have been an Audio Delay system, used by Live Tv and Radio shows, to censor rude callers and guests. Giving the line director 30 seconds or so, to push the mute button, before anything went out on the airwaves. I've seen another model of the tape transport, used as set props in the Tv series as fictional computer hardware.I doubt that 1/4" magnetic tape (seen) could ever handle video images, except at a very high speed.

@TheIntersect @adam This picture was what turned up in a quick search for an old transverse-scan video tape deck. You are correct, this is not such a video tape, but internet search is a vague and approximate thing, and the picture is for illustration purposes, a 19" rack from the tube era. You're probably correct as to what this is. Transverse scan video technology was soon transistorized, and shrunk to a monolithic box about the size of a car, still with the 2" thick wagon wheels -- I have wrangled such wheels, back in the day..
