How can we rely on electric vehicles when all the main issues we have with electronics depend on battery faults? I can replace a 250$ mobile phone or a 1000$ laptop... with so much electronics waste which is a shame... I cannot replace a 40000$ car so easily!#climatechange #climate #climatecrisis #electricvehicles

@darkassandra While time will really tell, ...All #EV batteries have long warranties, minimum 8 years or 160k km. Meaning design life is MUCH longer. There are very few battery failures, compared to volumes.Batteries can in several cases be repaired instead of replacing fully, e.g. by replacing a module or fixing a fault that is not in the cells. These repairs are done for real to oldest out-of-warranty cars (#Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf). Not exactly cheap though.

@darkassandra First of all, you don’t have to replace the car if all you need is a new battery. Second, let my share my anecdotal evidence: After 10 years and 250.000 km, the battery in my car still has around 80% of its original capacity. Batteries don’t die like engines where at some point your car suddenly turns into a brick. Batteries degrade gracefully and it’s your call how far along you want to take it. Then: 2nd life (stationary storage). And eventually recycling.

@darkassandra I currently drive a 2013 Tesla with a 10 year old battery pack and it's fine. Well over 80% of pack orginal capacity. With good design and thermal management packs may last decades.

@darkassandraIs there much evidence that $40,000 EVs are less reliable than $40,000 ICEs?

@jdorff How many miles can your car run before recharging?

@billheywood I know ICEs first hand, and need to drive 300 to 400 miles each work trip...

@billheywood and I like the sound of ICEs (at least of some of them) and the smell of hydrocarbon.

@darkassandra Let me add that my anecdotal evidence refers to battery tech that is 10 years old, obviously. Battery tech has come a long way in the past 10 years and newer batteries will likely last (much) longer than the early models from 2013!You cannot compare a car battery to consumer electronics. In consumer electronics, the battery is not a priority or in some cases maybe even planned obsolescence. Your experience with those is not applicable to electric cars.

@intermobility Is yours a fully electric vehicle or a hybrid? How far can you drive between charges? How many charging points do you have in your area? All the best!

@mjpk thanks for your advise! Here the charging infrastructure is almost absent, and the prices of fully EVs are still too high.

@darkassandra when the model S 60 was new with 19” tires, EPA range was 208 miles. I have 21” and that’s about a 10% range reduction (187m). When charged to 100% it says 178 miles.

@jdorff Thanks! That's not bad actually, but sometimes it can be difficult if using the car for work!
