The gooseberry harvest begins...Turned out I was actually a little lax b/c we've had like a week of rain, and your boots will turn into balls of clay until the surface dries up out there. So, a few overripe guys in here, but it's fine they still taste good.Any that are truly beyond the pale I can just open up, shove in pots & see if it gets me some new plants.

@merchantHelios Thanks, and yeah I almost thought I was going crazy b/c I could've sworn that I remembered hearing that the currant/gooseberry family was a host for the blight that basically destroyed the American chestnut. I've searched for it in the past, but came up blank. Turns out I'm not crazy : archewild.com/species-spotlight-ribes-americanum/ (see: 'Legal Restrictions')Would be curious to learn about any other bits of how we've worked w/ the family in this country. Any refs?

@SapientPearwood Depends a bit on when you harvest them. From very tart to a more straightforwardly sweet with some smells/currents (pun I suppose intended) that you kind of have to experience to get.

@collatz yeah chestnut blight was a different thing - that was due to Asian chestnut trees being imported with blight in them infecting American chestnut trees. Original restrictions on the ribes family came from a threat to the lumber industry (ribes carry white pine blister rust blight harmlessly to themselves but greatly damages White Pines, which were and are a valuable commodity in the American limber industry). Originally they were just restricted to not be allowed to be grown near white pine, but that eventually expanded to effectively banning them. That, combined with many ribes not fitting the American pallet (the stronger varieties tended to be more popular in Europe even in the mid 1800s), led to nobody really protesting as they were effectively banned in many states to be grown individually, and actually banned to be grown commercially anywhere in the US (this is still the case afaik)

@merchantHelios Ah, dag, I guess I was muddling my pathogens/affected-species. I think I originally heard about the affect to White Pine here, and also listened to some pieces on the devastation of American Chestnut, but it's been enough years that I've blurred the associations. youtube.com/watch?v=bQs7novlvtA

@collatz Dont feel bad about that. I didn't even realize there was wild asparagus until 2 days ago when I saw a video from one of foragers in my general area picking some of it.
