@tchambers Google pretty much hired all the people who were working on the decentralized social web back then, and then made Google Buzz but mistakenly bundled it into Gmail, got a huge backlash both legally and otherwise from doing so and essentially left the community starved of many of its main contributors without getting any product.Would love to hear the inside story of it all from @chrismessina, @will, Joseph Smarr, @jpanzer etc now years later (and @blaine, David Recordon etc)

@chrismessina @voxpelli @tchambers @will @blaine @evan @jasnell @walkah @bradfitz @Julien51 @jpanzer Those names especially are super confusing, especially OpenID and OpenID Connect. I've tried looking for how the hell OpenID works (demos? ELI5s? docs? SDKs?) but all I've gotten are results about OpenID Connect (which I do use for some personal services, via a self-hosted Keyoxide server!) since it's far more widely known

@blake @simon did a very good intro video on OpenID using Wikitravel as the relying party.

@evan @blake Frustratingly I uploaded that video to the Internet Archive and Google Video... and both of them seem to have deleted it! https://web.archive.org/web/20110204140131/https://simonwillison.net/2006/openid-screencast/

@simon @evan @blake You may be aware that the openid service you used in that video shut down, which is the main problem with openid. Why would I create a single point of failure for my authentication needs?
