i feel a bit sorry for my oldest kid at the moment. She's an incredibly skilled artist (draw-er, paint-er) - at 12, she draws and paints better than nearly every adult I know...but she's grappling with the reality of whether it's even worth developing her talent, given that GPT art is exploding and her skills will be obsolete in the world she's growing into.

@rose_myrtle @rose_myrtle At some point, barring a world war, pretty much everything we can do will be able to be done better by machines. Being able to find joy and contentment from the work of your hands is such a valuable gift from God. It builds confidence, thankfulness, and an appreciation of our modern society. Teach her to learn, push herself, and not fall into the trap of comparing herself to others or processes that took generations to develop. Those who will most successfully be able to wield this new technology will be the ones who understand the fundamentals and how it came to be. Reinventing the wheel is partially necessary in every generation.

@rose_myrtle @multilingualchurch I think of AI like a pistol. It used to take skill to kill people, then anyone with a pistol could. It made killing easier and more ubiquitous. It used to take skill to do art, now with AI anyone can. However there will still be masters and specialists of the craft (eg:snipers) and people who can use the new tools better. Some of the skills of archery are obsolete, but some archery principles still hold true to gunplay. Or from my own experience all my dabblings with art feed into each other and the fact that there will always be (way) better artists than me doesn't stop me wanting to do art.

@Aslanmane @rose_myrtle @multilingualchurch ai is demonic. (actually has a demonic animus at the centre of the thing.)https://yeshuafreedom.com/w/wAyHborbGJKBNVSoxkDRVJthe goal of ai art and all this is to convince people subconsciously that AI is a good thing,, by sticking it in their faces and appealing to their laziness and greed. plain and simple.there will be a demand at some point,, for actual artists.i've always been an artist, and while i cannot promise this, im nearly certain people will get sick and tired of the ai art soon enough.

@rose_myrtle art will always be required. As will the artist that produce it. AI may be able to create a picture, but it's not art. It has no soul, it has no meaning.

@rose_myrtle the truth is, even without AI, those skills are in much higher supply than they are demand. I'd encourage her to find other ways to explore her creativity, like hacking software, with a joyful cleverness (as rms@gnu.org says). It certainly can be a hobby she continues at for years though. Getting a blue ribbon at the county fair for something you did just for fun is pretty sweet, no matter what your "real job" is.

@fuat2mb @rose_myrtle so what your saying is 'learn to code'. Terrible advice IMO. I realise we are all nerds here, but that does not mean everyone else is. Play to your strengths, and if art is a strength do it. Never do something like "hacking software" just because someone told you it's practical. Do it because you are good at it. The last thing we need is more incompetent software developers.

@philcolbourn @rose_myrtle I mean that is basically the definition of the modernism movement. Form for the sake of utility rather than aesthetics.

@ned @rose_myrtle eg. where is soul? where is feeling? where is skill? where is beauty? where is a captured thought? where is a moment in time? where is evidence of God? where is life?it's tax avoidance and speculation

@rose_myrtle AI isn't.it isn't artificial - some smart people made it.it isn't intelligence - it is finding most likely next thing given everything it has seen. it's probability. it is dumb.any appearance of intelligence is a reflection of our stupidity.

@philcolbourn @rose_myrtle >"Existence is primarily the problem of existence"LOL I can see why.
