Within minutes of the news breaking, multiple people had posted first-hand videos of the aftermath on Twitter (despite the site's stability issues). Over an hour later there was nothing on Mastodon, not even a repost of the videos from elsewhere.That's why journalists like Twitter. They can find news, from people experiencing it and from each other. Ads on Twitter are irrelevant.@carrideen

@lowqualityfacts (There's also issues like outlets worldwide pumping their stories into Twitter automatically, that outlets' own workflows are built to connect to Twitter while connecting to the Fediverse is in infancy and requires change, that official sources - governments etc - haven't yet moved here in most cases, and the network effect of so many news-interested people being on Twitter and not here. @lowqualityfacts Oh and full text/date etc. search. I understand why it isn't here. I like that it isn't here. But it's mighty useful for journalism. There are other ways, but why would you put the extra time and effort into those when you have full search on Twitter and what you're looking for probably isn't even here anyway?So yeah, lots of reasons. @tokyo_0 @lowqualityfacts I also think it's worth mentioning that there are amazing journalists here, many of them representing underreported perspectives. It's not a breaking news site yet, but I'm reading more and better journalism than I ever did on Twitter.

@lowqualityfacts i wish there was a way to have an algorithmic timeline because its easy to miss important posts from friends or news unless you read it all. Letting the user build its own algorithm in the client side would be neat. That would ease the manipulation and privacy concerns
