So the Steam client back/forward buttons are throwing me into random locations since the last update... I don't think I've ever gotten this annoyed at this program

@slaine It's a very close clone of NeXTSTEP 3. I've been building it for a while - mainly for myself. It is built on top of GNUstep, Backbone and some other userspace apps (some of which have been abandoned) as well as applications/framework written entirely by myself. My base system runs Slackware64, but I also ensure it runs on OpenBSD so unlike other projects (NEXTSPACE mainly) it doesn't link/require anything specific. The WindowMaker version running underneath is very custom too. I try to submit patches and issues upstream to GNUstep projects where applicable (mainly crash fixes) but given that a lot of my interactions with people in the community get ignored, it's been hit or miss success wise so I stick to working alone. There's other like me too that work on their own environment (https://onflapp.github.io/gs-desktop/index.html) but as always, they have very different goals in mind.My Mail app even supports various types of Mail-faces. Both local and online. It's built on GNUMail but again, quite a bit modified to facilitate all this.

@slaine One of the main reasons I was drawn to GNUstep originally, before I even got into NeXT stuff, was because the API came from a stable place.Gtk kept breaking, and even Qt had no guarantees. Meanwhile, OPENSTEP had been around for ages and was unlikely to go away or change drastically. So after I had to switch tool-kits the first time, I evaluated options, mainly from the perspective of longevity. This is seemingly it. The downside was that I had to learn Objective-C which was really new and alien to me. Once I got over the initial hurdles it was a piece of cake to write stuff for it. It's not just the GUI layer either - there's some really convenient/powerful classes in there. Ever wanted to integrate Regex into your program or have parsing of json or even xml/html done for you, all with tried and true APIs that bazillions of Apple developers have written documentation for? That's what really sold me, the fact that it looks like a system that doesn't waste your time is just the icing on the cake for me.

@eukara reminds me that I'm stuck with steamcmd for now because steam client is just plainly broken for me and it's never something that you can really debug.

@lanodan I know a lot of people that would use solely steamcmd on its own. Sadly production builds for mortals have the run command stripped out.

@eukara Pretty sure I'm part of those even if not entirely by choice. When a GUI breaks or becomes annoying I tend to switch to command line / TUI stuff and never go back, like I've been using mutt for at least 10 years, replaced XMMS with (mplayer/)mpv/ncmpc, …
