US highways are more like massive landing strips across the country ✈️

@ZySoua @stux bonus points if you land on a semi while it's moving.

@stux dunno, but unlike German Highways they ain't designed with that capability in mind!https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_stripAnd yes they were used during #REFORGER exercises in the #ColdWar: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notlandeplatz_auf_Stra%C3%9Fe#Autobahn-Behelfslandepl%C3%A4tze

@stux There are legal requirements that a certain proportion of interstate highways must be straight and unobstructed by wires for this exact reason.

@stux It's true. Wait til you see our parking lots. Check out the Mall at Millennia in Orlando on Google Maps on satellite view - the parking lot is like twice as big as the mall πŸ˜…

@stux It may seem that way, but they were not designed for that. Parts of highways that are super straight and free of obstructions tend to be in the desert, where you can just land a plane anywhere already. Other areas tend to be curved, have big signs, or have cables strung across them. There are highways around the world designed for backup landing strips (a 2β€―km strip of the East Coast Parkway in Singapore has easily-removable dividers to serve as a runway), but none in the US.

@stux the Eisenhower Interstate system criss crosses the country. Built during the Cold War, it stipulates that 1 out of every so many miles must be straight so that a plane could land in case of nuclear emergency.

@stux it’s intentional. The Interstate Highway System mandates that one mile out of every 5 be straight and free of obstructions (overpasses, wires) to support military planes.

@stux I think they were designed this way, too. Potential emergency landing strips for resupplying stuff during the fear of the cold war. Talk about overblowing a threat

Landing a space shuttle on a highway was possible, if you believe the movies. πŸ˜‰@stux
