I built this tool a year ago but I feel like Mastodon folks would like itThe "Weird Old Book Finder"Type in a search query, and it'll find one randomly-chosen public-domain book that matches the query -- and present it for immediate reading: https://weird-old-book-finder.glitch.meWhy only one book? @clive I had been looking for a book for years because it is so expensive for me. Very surprised to finally buy it from a Tunbridge Wells Oxfam shop for £8.99. Privatising The World by Oliver LetwinNormally over £40 used and £60 plus new.Even, the local library could not supply it for me. I believe much of the content of this book has already happened 😥#Books #Reading #Politics

@clive @nikadubrovsky That looks awesome! Are you aware of any places that collect post-1927 public domain books? Well, I guess it also needs to keep fitting in the "old" category 😁

@stevenroose @nikadubrovsky The Internet Archive has tons of post-1927 books! But to read most of them you have to log in and only one person at a time can be reading an in-copyright book ...So it wouldn't be possible to have the instant-gratification-reading I was aiming for here, alas

@clive @nikadubrovsky I was mostly wondering about public domain books.. Meaning, books explicitly attributed to the public domain by their authors. Or is that so extremely uncommon that it wouldn't make sense to try compile lists of those?Could also be a website hosted in a country where copyright doesn't exist so books could be made freely available.

@stevenroose @clive Russians are good at this! The problem with content that has no copyright is that it becomes pirated and that means literally marginal to all existing distribution systems. Is it possible, despite being marginal, to get into distribution channels? David has always said that he prefers to publish with big publishers. I think he was right. He checked out both...

@clive this is utterly delightful. Thank you so much! My first query came up with this book, which I don’t find weird at all, but that is due to the fact that I’m a weird poultry person. I could relate the fascinating story of the Dorking breed in the former GDR, or how, when I came to Dorking, the local museum that exhibits a pair of stuffed birds was closed for the day… but I’m on a 500 characters limit 😉 #chickensofmastodon

@clive @komputernik The Dorking chicken was extremely popular in its time, and was kept not just as a hobby but for a bit of income as well.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorking_chickenAlso, I guess editions in England weren’t printed in the numbers that we’re used to today. Would be interesting to know what the price for quality paper was at that time. There still were paper mills in the UK back then; I heard that in Scotland at least, they’re all gone.
