There’s no more color because there’re no more children. Without kids in your life it’s easy to become detached from vibrance, joy, and vitality. The norm used to be working parents, now it’s sterilized, joyless bug people living like urban automatons. They see color as an eyesore, an uncomfortable reminder that they are alone and have nothing to live for. The HR roastie caste will say it’s because they want to court a more “mature” or “classy” adult demographic, but they’re just dead inside.

@WashedOutGundamPilot I sincerely believe a significant part of it comes down to accidental post 9/11 market forces. People buy white cars because they're safest. People want to be safe because they live in a rotting society that has suffered the blackest eye it possibly can: 3600 people dead in one fell swoop by an enemy born of an ally, leading to multiple forever wars, most of which ended in *humiliating* defeat and that they didn't understand or particularly want fought, while the enemy swarmed into their nation. They don't know their society anymore, don't know their neighbor, don't know what the future holds. But at least their car is as visible as it can be. A small, fragmentary particle of safety they can grasp onto with certainty. Hack fraud designers look at trends of colours being sold, so that they can sell them to soulless global-capitalists. They notice white, grey, black, they assume people like it. Or, they're disgusting modernism poisoned filth who like concrete blocks, glass & steel, which they value as the highest expression of their "art".

@Howl Economic angle too, but I was talking about the stuff outside of cars. Every brand has remodeled itself as a wannabe upscale, somber, adult thing. Cars are easier to sell in bland colors, so declining economic security - and the belief that they’re less liekly to incur speeding tickets - add gas to that fire

@WashedOutGundamPilot The economy has been fake and gay since 2000, color costs money. Its easy to match black or white and many people can't tell between different greyscales.

@WashedOutGundamPilot There's also a pathological fear of appearing "immature" that drives a lot of this, hence the need for everything (particularly entertainment) to be rebranded with "mature themes" (sex and gore and no colors). A lot of people are still mentally children, and they can't stand being reminded of that, on top of what you said about being childless and alone. It's why they get so pissed off and uncomfortable if you mention that you like something that's been deemed as "for kids", or say that you don't like [GRIMDARK REBOOT #1529].It basically comes down to that essay by C.S. Lewis. These people are obsessed with the trappings of "maturity", because they never grew up. :mokou_lying:

@Giganova8 I think avoidance plays a bigger role than we understand. People don’t like thinking about some issues, like getting a fat bill in the mail and putting it face down on the countertop, then slowly putting more and more things on top of it until they forget it exists at all. Sweeping away the crap and forcing them to come to terms with it is painful

@DemonSixOne @WashedOutGundamPilot if you buy a bmw or other expensive car you can literally still pick any color you want btw.I'm sure much of it comes down to what dealers order. Most of the new cars on the lot are what dealers order and nobody custom orders shit anymore. The last time my parents tried to custom order a base model Subaru in the mid 10s it took so long the dealer paid some guy to drive/tow one 2 states over here from another dealer with like 1-2 options and gave it to us for the base model price.
