@berlinbridge Absolutely. If your timeline feels quiet, it’s probably because you follow very few people.

@anderspuck thanks for the heads up. When I was first using this I found I couldn’t find lots of people by searching their names, you had to actually know their handle, the UX was terrible :/ has there been a fix in the meantime? Or how do you find people?

@berlinbridge You could try using Followgraph. It has worked really well for me. It's also possible to follow hashtags, so that can be a quick way to get started. https://followgraph.vercel.app

Once you find some accounts to follow, consider browsing through *their* follows to find shared interests or familiar people. In the absence of (dodgy) corporate 'feeding' algorithms, here you pick your own menu. Besides subscribed 'follows' you ought to make good use of hashtags. Try subscribing to *many* hashtags/keywords such as #Ukraine, #NAFO ;-) #natsec etc. and words-du-jour like, um, #prigozhin, and you should always use hashtags in your posts to aid discoverability in the fediverse. Also, get your buddies to at least establish a presence here. Eventually encrypted DMs will become a reality (they're in the Mastodon to-do) and hopefully one day in the not too distant future you'll have an EU- or Intl.org-provided secure instance to call your own.Until couple of days ago I still *watched* (w/o account there) a handful of #twitter accounts and the replies there were largely a cesspool of inauthenticity or outright manipulation. Mastodon aims to be much healthier in that respect, but requires some cranial elbow grease, especially initially. Patience is a virtue and good things come... @berlinbridge @anderspuck

@demi7en @berlinbridge @anderspuck may I ask you a question? What is in the end the equivalent of a quote? For instance if I want to quote and comment (inside a post part of a thread), what's the way of doing it here? Adding a link does not visualize the snapshot, if I am not mistaken.

@edolis @demi7en @berlinbridge @anderspuck adding the link is the best you can do for now. Correct, it does not embed the content of the quoted post. That’s just how Mastodon is for now. They are working on adding better quoting, but right now it does not exist yet.

@jaanus @edolis @demi7en @berlinbridge If you use an app like Ice Cubes, quoting works like on Twitter.

@berlinbridge @anderspuck This platform is not as intuitive as the Bird site. It requires an investment of time to find people and get accustomed. I am still getting used to it. I think the reason the name search rarely works is because of the decentralization. I expect the name search would work on your local domain, but not for users on other domains.

@billbrooklyn @anderspuck Thanks. Yea that’s the sense I’m getting. People are mentioning other apps you apparently need to download to make this one better to use? Not a good sign 😬

@berlinbridge @billbrooklyn Well, that was the situation on Twitter too until Musk pulled the plug on third-party apps.

@berlinbridge Third-party apps used to be part of Twitter's charm, and I'm glad they're flourishing here. Anyway, you should be able to find people in your field using the tools here: https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon Besides individuals, there are groups. Search for people via hashtags too. And maybe follow people more liberally here, just to get started. @anderspuck @billbrooklyn
