       @codinghorror I don't think anyone wanted or consciously chose to rely on them, everyone just got slowly forced to rely on these platforms as more and more users of the web started refusing to create accounts on individual websites and doing everything through the same handful of big social media platforms.

       @bubbline @codinghorror I do think there was an allure ca. 2005 to the simpler sign-up flows of centralized platforms. And even to using OAuth to use those platforms to sign in elsewhere.It’s just that it turned out to be not all that.

       @chucker @bubbline I think all of the above can be true; humans need time to adapt to new technologies and we haven't quite gotten there yet, but I am cautiously optimistic
