Goodbye Fedora, welcome Debian.First impressions: I had to reinstall Cinnamon desktop a few times because it failed to start after login. But other than that it seems pretty good. Will see how it goes.#debian #cinnamon #distrohopping #linux #distro #fosserytech

@fosserytech You could also try Debian based Linux Mint Cinnamon. Maybe less headache. I'm loving the Ubuntu based edition.

@fosserytech Similar story. I just rebuilt my Fedora as Ubuntu. Fedora has been my daily grinder since F28 or so. Before that, CentOS 7. I no longer trust the RHEL ecosystem.

@nikomat I don't really like the Ubuntu base anymore but I plan to try out LMDE if Debian doesn't work for me in the long term

@noiq I personally don't trust Canonical either because they are also owned by Vanguard and done shady things in the past

@fosserytech TBH, I'm not up to date for the reasons that Ubuntu itself has lost so much trust. What I do know is that I dabble across a lot of domains from virtualization to GNU Radio to UAV software to malware analysis and almost all the tutorials are built to Ubuntu. Mapping Ubuntu commands and packages to Fedora was a price I was willing to pay to be current in "enterprise linux" tooling. Programmer friends appreciate #PopOS , but I'm more of tools guys and thus will stick with Ubuntu for now.

@fosserytech Can confirm LMDE is fantastic. I still prefer to start with a minimal Debian install and just add in the minimum packages needed, pinning only the few I use to LinuxMint repos, but have played around plenty with their official ISOs as well and have them in use on a few machines too.@nikomat

@fosserytech You could certainly do worse for a choice of #Linux distribution than #Debian. That said, if you're used to the fairly rapid release schedule and latest-and-greatest approach to which version of software to ship of #Fedora, the package version stability and slow release cycle (major upgrades only about once every two years) of #Debian is going to be a bit of a culture shock. On the upside, it is EXCEPTIONALLY rare for a Debian upgrade to break anything.

@noiq I think one of the reasons why #Ubuntu has lost a lot of trust as of late is the way they've been pushing their "Ubuntu Pro" subscription service recently. (I also think that Ubuntu is one of the few if not actually the only mainstream #Linux distribution to include advertisements in the default UI, but I could be wrong on that one.)

@mkj @noiq yeah the advertisements can be so annoying. And if you want to install Firefox from apt, you get the snap instead. And not to mention the Amazon search function which sent all search phrases to Amazon servers (this has been removed of course because literally nobody liked it but still if a company does this once it isn't trustworthy anymore in my eyes).

@nekothegamer @fosserytech It's very unfortunate that Fedora is catching some "guilty by association" right now. The RHEL woes don't impact Fedora.

@vwbusguy @nekothegamer not yet but if a company does one anti-FOSS thing than I can't really trust them anymore

@mkj I mostly install software from Flathub so that's not a big deal. For stability, it's already broken for me for some reason. Each time I have to switch tty after login to start Cinnamon manually

@mkj @fosserytech It's true, the use of sandboxed package managers like flatpak have made rock-solid distros like Debian a lot more palatable for those of us that want stability and the latest software. It even made me think of a distrohop to Debian for a few days! The thought of reinstalling a million packages though put me off...

@mechatour @mkj yeah distrohopping is so hard. You get used to a distro and it's so hard to ditch it and set up everything again in a new environment. I think I'm done with distrohopping this year 😂
