@TedUnderwood it’s truly impressive how the whims of one dude turned a site that was basically internet infrastructure into a walled garden of shit

@TedUnderwood 😂 the few advertisers he has left are going to love this. I occasionally still check in and today definitely stayed FAR below that 600 before I exceeded my “rate limit”.

@Dreamwieber and as you point out, Bluesky is struggling with the increased load

@TedUnderwood yea, as heavy handed as this is I feel like I might actually pony-up 😂 It's making me realize that when a big event happens — a wildfire, an election, whatever — there's still really just one place that can handle the load. Maybe I just haven't figured this site out though?

@Dreamwieber I find Mastodon works smoothly — at least on my server. The main problem for me here is that the tech industry is not here. So there's a limit to what I can learn here.

@TedUnderwood the machinery is running smoothly. And, I'm making an honest attempt to appreciate it for what it is.What I miss is the real time nature of Twitter, and the feeling that I can follow an unfolding event in all its vibrant messy glory.

@Dreamwieber Yeah, I think that's a combination of fewer people here / less diversity and no algorithmic feed. That's why I'm betting on Bluesky or Threads over the long term. You've got to have the algorithmic feed.

@TedUnderwood @Dreamwieber all the Apple tech people are here now. This place was lit during WWDC.

@Transportist @Dreamwieber Ah, that's promising. Of course, when I say "tech" what I really mean is ML. On that topic, I definitely miss out if I'm not listening to Twitter.

@TedUnderwood @Transportist @Dreamwieber – Any idea why the ML people are so reluctant to join Mastodon?

@christof @Transportist @Dreamwieber I don’t really know, except that my impression is, academics are more willing to move than industry people. And industry is really important in that field right now.

@TedUnderwood @christof @Transportist @Dreamwieber and software industry is difficult to move because it wants proximity/exposure to capital, and capital is not here.
