@Jim @natsock I still love my Switch. Yeah, the hardware is old and underpowered, but the games are great. I cannot go back to a non-handheld system ever again. So great to play the Switch in bed, couch, wherever. For me, it proves you don't need top of the line graphics to have fun.

@Jim @natsock Are the games that good on Switch? Or is it just the hype/prestige and global market size that's increased sales? I mean I've used Yuzu to play a couple Switch titles, but quite a few games are just... boring for my tastes. Nothing as entertaining as some PS2 titles; no offence Switch bros. @Dutch_Roberts @natsock It actually has a pretty varied library especially when you count overseas titles that can be played since nothing is region locked. Super robot wars, fatal frame series, disgaea games, bayonette games, no more heroes games, tons of jrpgs, shmups, indie titles. I'd say behind the PS1 and PS2 the switch library of titles is my favorite due to the mixture of what you can find if you look.

Most big Nintendo franchises were represented on the Wii U with mainline entries. It was probably always intended as something of a transition console, so I don't think its failure (and that thing truly was dead in the water, it eventually became clear that NOTHING could save it) rushed the Switch's release *that* much.

I'd be more upset about the Wii U eShop shutting down so early, given some of the Virtual Console gems available.

Plenty of people hoped and even believed that Nintendo would do something similar with Mario Galaxy, especially since one of the 2D sections in Odyssey gave us a glimpse of what 2D Mario Galaxy would be like.

There's nothing inherently superior about sandbox Mario - the Mario Galaxy games were much more linear, and benefited greatly from it. Nintendo didn't actually nail the sandbox 3D Mario style until Odyssey as far as I'm concerned.

It certainly has its merits, but some of its individual Shines must be some the worst stretches of gameplay Nintendo has ever done (with the exception of that retarded helicopter section in SNES Pilotwings).And the game is shockingly rushed and unpolished for a flagship Nintendo game, they clearly were desperate to push it out as quickly as possible because launching without a Mario game was being cited as a major reason the GameCube underperformed.

Adding a few more levels to get past that threshold would motivate me to not feel stuck at that tipping point.

The smoothness of the fixed camera angles (thanks to Koizumi hating the 3D camera of the Marios and Zeldas he had previously worked on so much he deliberately made Donkey Kong Jungle Beat 2D to take a break), the live orchestra soundtrack for the first time, the remixing of mechanics from other platformers which built on, or were built 50 stories on top of, the foundation of Mario 64 such as the spin in Crash or the gravity from Ratchet and Clank in a way that still felt inventive enough to work as its own product, the effective use of every console gimmick (pointer, motion waggle, even balancing) such that I cannot imagine playing it without the controller it was made for, the surprise playable Luigi, and the cute console notifications if you got to certain milestones basically made it impossible for Galaxy 2 to have the same impact as 1. The gap between 64/Sunshine and Galaxy is a chasm, but the gap between every Mario game after is at most a commute because SMG improved so much from its predecessors that even if you can argue Galaxy 2 has better levels, 3D Land had the social aspect to beat your streetpassers times to compensate for the reduced difficulty, 3D world essentially has the Mario Party friendship killer aspect in platformer form, and Odyssey is bigger game which can keep you invested the longest, that feel of hitting the Gusty Garden Galaxy and the most iconic part of the score plays as you shake the remote to match that feeling of ascension is something no other Mario game truly matches in terms of combined art direction, level design, music, and console gimmicks.

So many genius mechanics, so many "this is so fucking cool!" moments.And yeah, Galaxy definitely marked a turning point for the 3D Mario platformers, with Nintendo stepping up their game dramatically (except in the case of 3D Land, which for me kinda feels like a tech demo next to 3D World) and finally having 3D Mario reach its full potential. I hope Mario Bros. Wonder can do something like that for 2D Mario.
