Demonstrations in #Sweden, including burning a Koran outside a mosque, create "an environment of fear" that will impact the ability of Muslims and other religious minorities to exercise freedom of religion, says State Department spokesman Matt Miller.

@w7voa I think what gets lost in the cultural context is that us Swedes really don't care what you burn. The flag, the Bible, whatever floats your boat.

@troed @w7voa #Sweden: expects #Türkiye, the second largest #NATO country, to send their sons and daughters to fight and die when #Russia attacks Sweden, but refuses to extend even the most basic iota of decency in exchange. Like a neighbor asking you to watch his house while he’s on vacation after calling your wife ugly all over town.

@henry @w7voa That's my point. Swedes don't care what you burn. It's not considered decent or not decent whatever you do with some object - be that the Swedish flag, the Bible or a Pippi Longstocking book. The culture clash strikes both ways.

@w7voa @troed Burning books is not “culture”. Fermented fish is Swedish culture, but you don’t consume it in the office, because of basic standards among humans.

@henry @w7voa It is indeed a part of Swedish culture that we don't take offence at such manifestations. This is a very famous Swedish work of art: https://affischerna.se/progg_poster/skanda-flaggan-2/It's our flag, burning. The text says "desecrate the flag". The word for the male sexual organ is promenently in the middle. Now, what would you suggest? That Sweden creates laws specifically around the burning of one (out of thousands) of religious objects, or that we backtrack of decades of cultural evolution? We're well aware that we're an extreme country when it comes to secular values. We also consider it to be a good thing.https://www.iffs.se/en/news/sweden-the-extreme-country/

@henry @w7voa That piece of art is one of the things that caused Sweden to remove desecration of the flag as a crime. That was the point. So, to get back to my original comment. Swedes just ignore idiots who burn stuff for attention. Why give it to them.

@troed @w7voa Putting an end to this is the decent thing to do. At some point you just have to be pragmatic.

@troed @w7voa this is presumably about all muslims and not only swedes.
