@neil @privacat have you looked at DocuSign? If yes, what did you think of it.Full disclosure: I am currently being paid to work on integrating it into another service, but don't really have any strong feelings either way.Just curious what it's like from (potential) user viewpoint

@nCrazed @neil @privacat As an occasional recipient of things to sign, I like the convenience of DocuSign, but I can't but wonder how it can possibly be legally binding. Anyone could have intercepted the email with the link.

@mansr @neil @privacat I've always had similar questions regarding validity of screenshots as evidence...

@mansrVarious laws in most countries have acknowledged that esignatures are as legally valid as wet signatures. Nothing stops forgery, and if someone wants to forge an agreement they can do so (usually easily) regardless if the agreement is mailed or emailed. @nCrazed @neil

@privacat @nCrazed @neil The fact that traditional paper signatures are easily forged is hardly an excuse to accept yet another method that is even easier to fake.

@neil @nCrazed @privacat Wouldn't a written signature have to at least somewhat resemble the real one in order to survive mild scrutiny?Yes, I used to "sign" credit card slips with a wavy line back in the day.

@neil @nCrazed @privacat Sure, but if I wanted to challenge a signature that was supposedly mine, wouldn't it help at least a little to show other documents signed by me with a different-looking signature?

@neil @nCrazed @privacat That would of course also be a possibility.

@neil @mansr @privacat that's the part that had me confused when I first realized that in most contexts your signature is accepted as is without any additional verification

@nCrazed @neil @privacat Isn't verification the reason you're supposed to sign credit cards and why traveller's cheques have (had?) two signature fields? For most things, though, any squiggle seems to be accepted without question.

@mansrOh man, nothing will disabuse you of quaint notions like consistency and resemblance, quite like reading a bunch of contracts and wills, trusts and estates cases. We have literal centuries of cases arguing over these issues. @neil @nCrazed

@privacat @neil @nCrazed Oh, for that I need only look at my own excuse for a signature.

@nCrazed @mansr @neil @privacat and weird things unlike “wet signatures”…Like all my PGP signed stuff is definitely me…Until.“Oh shit I just found my private key was compromised 7 months ago, so you cannot now, retrospectively, trust any signatures since then”.That is not a “wet signature” thing, AFAIK.

@revkNo, but 'omg, I just discovered that the signature purportedly from me divesting my inheritance to my uncle Clyde 3 years ago was forged by uncle Clyde' goes back for ages.@nCrazed @mansr @neil

@privacat @revk @nCrazed @neil I recall an incident in school wherein the headteacher was discovered to have "forged" the science teacher's signature on some document by simply writing his name in her regular handwriting. Everyone who saw it agreed it was definitely her writing, not his. The document wasn't in any way controversial, so she could have simply asked him to sign it, but they had some kind feud going on. It was all very silly.
