4K monitors feel like a serious step up. i don't think they're unnecessary at all.laser printers, magazines and newspapers aim for 300 DPI minimum.a 24" monitor is ~20" across. at 3840 pixels, that's ~192 PPI. for crisp reproduction of text, it needs to be a little higher than that.which is why we still use anti-aliased fonts on computers, but they're not needed when printing things. most modern laser printers can do 600 DPI and the difference from 300 DPI is visible.a 384 PPI 24" monitor would need a resolution of 7680x4320, and this would look about as sharp as a laser printout, and you probably wouldn't need antialiased fonts anymore.

@lore I think we sit quite far from a monitor versus when reading from a printed page.Don’t smoothing still definitely needed, but it’s nice to have a display 3840 pixels wide where I can use scaling at 150% to give me the same effective space as a monitor with 2560 pixels width, but the extra resolution contributes to sharper definition of text.Source: have various monitors with 2560x1600 and also 3840x2560 resolutions.

@lore probably part of the reason theyre often seen as unnecessary is because theyre marketed as good for movies and games, when their real strength is readability of text. i mean i will never be able to afford something like that but it would make my life SO much easier

@skye my income situation has been very, uh, up and down. there was a brief period where i could afford 5000 NOK for a 4K monitor. so i spent that. it's an HP Envy. if it dies, i'll have to buy something much cheaper.

@skye for the same reason, i have an iPhone 13 Pro. if it dies, though, i'm gonna have to use a spare, which host 1/10 of the iPhone. a MacBook Pro i bought when i had money recently died, so i'm using a spare for that right now.

@skye i'm kind of hoping that before this 4K monitor dies, 4K will have come down enough in price that i can afford a replacement and won't have to downgrade.

@skye when it comes to movies and such, people had a good time with the Star Wars sequels. those were shot on 2K digital cinema cameras. nobody ever complains about the resolution of those.

@skye (in terms of the quality of the screenwriting, that's a different story. i'm talking about the presentation. i figure if it's good enough for a massively successful movie franchise, it's good enough for anyone.)
