Red Hat answered a lot of the concerns about their last move. Makes sense to me, reading this.I’m not saying I totally agree with the move, but I understand why they’re doing it. https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/red-hats-commitment-open-source-response-gitcentosorg-changes

@thelinuxEXP This statement makes sense if you recognize they are trying to do the kind of business that the #GPL was made to get away from.Essentially they're saying they want to kill repackaged projects because they want businesses to pay to use #RHEL so they're putting the source behind a TOS wall. That's not how #opensource projects are supposed to work no matter how you slice it. The only reason #rhel got to the size it is, is because of projects like #centos .

@gnarkotics @thelinuxEXP All the code is in CentOS Stream, Red Hat is withholding nothing.

@evasb @thelinuxEXP #CentOSStream is an upsteam sandbox for new features that may or may not be included in the next release. This specifically cant be used by projects such as #AlmaLinux or #RockyLinux or the now unsupported #centos because they wont be able to guarantee 1:1 correspondence with #RHELIt IS different and the TOS of #Redhat developer program forbid redistribution of rhel source which is against #GPLThis IS a big deal, #CentOSStream is NOT #centos

@thelinuxEXP #rhel is used by an incredible amount of companies, most of which will pay alot for #redhats SUPPORT of the os. They are shifting their product from the expertise of their employees to the OS itself. This whole statement is just a soft rebrand of whats been suspected all along."We want more money and to do it we are trying to skirt things clearly alllowed by #GPL "

@gnarkotics @thelinuxEXP No. All #CentOSStream updates are good enough to be included in #RHEL and most of them are included. The differences are that CentOS Stream will sometimes receive earlier or even more updates (an earlier fix would be released sooner on CentOS Stream in a new package, RHEL would receive later in a later package if it is not critical in a new minor release). The difference between RHEL and CentOS Stream is not the code or features that will be included in a new release (false), but is the cadence of the update releases.

@evasb @thelinuxEXP the fact that it us upstream means it is not 1:1 with current rhel which is what repackage projects depend on. If this wasnt the case then redhat would have absolutely no reason to restrict access to its source code

@gnarkotics @thelinuxEXP Now the clones will need to do some work comparing #RHEL releases with CentOS Stream and get the corresponding packages to make it close enough to RHEL.See that the problem is not about the code, but about some people having to do some work curating their own packages?

@evasb @thelinuxEXP its about redhat trying to kill downstream projects by making it more difficult for them to be produced. This is the antithesis of what #FOSS is about. Not to mention the TOS of their developer license prevents redistribution. What this IS about is one of the most successful open source projects turning it's back on the principles and community that made it successful in order to grind out profit for #ibmThis would be equivalent to #debian trying to kill #ubuntu

@gnarkotics @evasb @thelinuxEXP I have no horse in this race, & might be mistaken, but...>equivalent to #debian trying to kill #ubuntu...seems slightly hyperbolic to me, plus also apocryphal, given that afaik...- #ubuntu is downstream of #debian- #fedora is upstream of #CentOSStream 🤷‍♀️

@MsDropbear @evasb @thelinuxEXP #centos and #RockyLinux and #AlmaLinux are downstream of #rhel. The point is that rhel is trying to choke out downstream project in a way that is against #GPLIn that way it would be like #debian trying to kill #ubuntu in that it is a downstream project from debian
