Google is not a search engine anymore. It’s just a portal with featured content. Your search query is just a theme you’d like to loosely filter the content.

What’s more fucked, is it’s not entirely Google’s fault. The web that Google indexes is similarly algorithm-optimised featured content in the guise of a discussion or tutorial or journalism. It’s featured content all the way down.

Given there's about 15-50 websites that the majority of my investigation of any topic seems to revolve around, I sometimes wonder about the feasibility of having a private search index of those sites using Elastic or something

@geordie I hope to read more about what is replacing, or will replace in the near future, our source for pure search information. As a writer and researcher, I have been aware for years that online search results have changed dramatically, and sources that used to be online are no longer available through any normal search tactic. That seems dangerous for all of us.

@geordie Sometimes I miss Altavista. Sure it was bad, but it still occasionally found something useful.

@geordie Sad admission: I used yahoo's search the other day. First time since the 90s.

@geordie its pointless to search for information now, I just use search to save a few clicks and tell it to search a specific website. I'm sure a lot of people do that.

@Kels_316 yeah there was a thing the other day about how many people add reddit.com to their search terms because they want to surface a discussion by actual people about the topic, and Reddit having heaps of dark subs at the moment because of Reddit's bullshit is causing problems

@geordie @Kels_316 Yea, it’s surely one of the more long term interesting dynamics of the fediverse … to reclaim all the shared human information that makes the internet actually valuable and protect it from corporate interference and corruption. To ensure spaces of human interaction are protected.

@LevZadov @Kels_316 @geordie I gave DDG a solid attempt for a week but found it just couldn't keep up with what I wanted to search. When trying to find a movie title, for example, both Google and Bing gave the correct results on the first page while DDG flailed. It might be better for certain kinds of searches compared to others, but none of the search engines are particularly great these days.I miss advanced Altavista.

@geordie "Each instance of "sponsored content" that now dominates every result, is basically free ad for Duck Duck Go.
