again thinkin how hardware of any type regarded by USians as "dirt" cheap, almost trahs, almost unusuable, its usually pretty much top of the lilne here in the global south

@cryborg this makes me wonder, is it common at all in the global south for people to use linux or other free operating systems? not having access to newer hardware that can run shitty bloated consumer OSes I would think would maybe create more incentive for people to explore stuff like that

@cryborg Got some examples? Because it could also just be that the most vocal USians about hardware are ones loaded with absurd amounts of money.

@emilis @cryborg I know that North Korea, China, and Cuba all have linux distros, which is ofc based, but I'm wondering whether that pattern carries over to the everyday lives of people outside of communist countries t all

@nyx but yea is like what you say in the other FOSS post, is mostly idealism just ideology, or comatose initiatives or just LARPin w other nerds (the left in a nutshell lol) thats why i got tired and dissillusioned abt the foss stuff even tho i used to be very vocal annoyin abt it. and also gettin a job on IT lol and other life stuff ofc

@cryborg I see. that doesn't surprise me, sounds a lot like the situation here honestly, at least in my own experiences working in IT. lots of just continuing to use outdated Windows versions

@nyx i mean yes and no.. i've tried to get involved in public institutions programs related to this but they all seeem to be very underfunded or inactive but there have been more materially focused FOSS initiatives from the governments (for example, in Argentina the Conectar Igualdad program handed over netbooks that run ubuntu, from what im readin now they shipp with their own distro Huayra) but idkk like ime as an independent tech in the regular the response to this is a lot of outdated windows7 machines, propietary propaganda is v strong everywhere it seems

@lanodan did u just #notallusians my post lol.......... jokes aside is just a superficial comment like my experience interactin w USians (first worlders in general) has been they have much easier access to material shit and don't realize how big the gap is. ofc there's other axis intersections like class and race etcccc but thats too obvious i dont think i need to mention. like you wouldn't compare a latam CEO to a US proletariat to prove a point thatd be absurd. i mean yea u r right, rich ones are more vocal and monopolize the web narrative, but USians in general already monopolize the web narrative. like it doesn't even need to be "absurd amounts of money" just ask what a basic pc means for latam users vs us users, the baseline is v different specially in a world thats dollarized and punishes 3rd world economies :333

@cryborg there's a reason why I asked first like you're suggesting I'd do while making my assumptions clear as added context.Basically because people tend to put countries like USA or Europe as much more baseline-wealthy than they actually are (to be clear, they are) thanks to the horribly cleaned up media representation and other people often covering their actually average-spec gear whenever that seems to slightly matter. It's almost comparable to how you have techies typically forgetting what kind of hardware normal people have or even what other techies doing different kind of work have. (say designer's near-latest macbook vs. admin/dev's ~4 years old thinkpad)

@lanodan yea i mean the multimedia propaganda campaign is massive and unrrealistic so i get what u mean (we are even talkin in english as a common ground) but im sad to say my resentment towards USians has been checcked against by interactin w other friendly and poor queers online too. just clueless to 3rd world material conditions and struggles but not ill intentioned at all, in the way someone that hasnt lived to see it usually is :3 and also fueled by a lot of annoyin reddit tech bros lol

@cryborg > we are even talkin in english as a common groundReminds me that I shouldn't have fluked spanish class, but well a third language seems like a pretty hard thing to acquire (english being chronologically my second)And I'd say clueless isn't really surprising. From what I've heard and experienced over the years… it's a lot of different kinds of struggles, typically because second-hand to throwaway stuff simply isn't the same but also how hard it can be to get a stable job situation or even getting one that pays you enough for basic living.

@nyx @cryborg not where i live. people just bear with it, adding ssds to make things faster. Also people use their phones a lot more for common tasks nowadays. even making pdfs, invoices, spreadsheets, and what not.

@lanodan @cryborg well the current thinkpad i'm using, i bought for $80 + shipping. Where i live, you cannot find laptops for less than $300. And don't even think about second hand market, that exists only for mobile phones and not for desktops/laptops. I've often been jealous how i can't easily import stuff from USA because the price for computers there (mostly 2nd handed, i don't need new) are much more cheaper than i could imagine being the case here.
