@lanodan mobile Linux is a joke. wish it was even sorta decent but at the moment I can't imagine what it could possibly be useful for since it very much feels like the Linux desktop (which itself is already trash) crammed into the form factor of a smartphone and also poorly optimized for the hardware it runs

@nyx @lanodan Also it's missing the security features of Android. Linux desktop security, which the phones inherit, is absolute dogshit.

@nyx That's thanks to the annoying NIH people from Gnome / Purism which just decided to throw away everything learned from Maemo/SailfishOS but also recent android. If I wanted to use a Psion Palm I would use a Psion Palm.

@w @nyx True but well android is pretty hacky in terms of how it does security. It does it right for what it's trying to do, but it does it with throwing away a lot of things like users being able to manage their files. It should have been with a non-Unix system.

@lanodan YEP. it is so insane to me how the whole ass Linux phone community has just totally sidelined and ignored Maemo/SailfishOS when there is ALREADY AN ESTABLISHED HISTORY of Linux on smartphones that was designed around the concept and did it right. like Sailfish actually seems like it has a really good UIbut no as usual the usual idiots behind the Linux desktop sabotaged that too

@lanodan @nyx Nowadays people use systems built on top of Linux that try to abstract the system to make it more bearable, with everything communicating over sockets and network interfaces. The actual underlying system is basically a maintenance closet that people only go into when a pipe is leaking. People would rather use their KDEs, their Androids, their emacs than use tools that integrate with the system. Things like Flatpak, Wayland, Pipewire, ostree etc are slowly turning the desktop into something more like Android because of this, and mobile Linux won't be that far off from what Android is now in the future.

@w @nyx yeah, it's adding things on top of each others while honestly the foundation is not only quite broken but also a complete nightmare to debug, specially when you don't want to throw security away with things like bpftrace, which is cool but linux ebpf is also a way to lie to userspace meaning nearly undetectable in-kernel rootkits…

@dc @lanodan personally my standards for whether or not I care about an OS are higher than "it boots and has good battery life"I would like just as much as anyone to be able to use mobile linux for anything. I've been following the development of mobile linux stuff for many years, since like 2015, and I've tried different things are various times (I even have a pinephone) and none of it has ever been usable for anything beyond maybe, maybe some command line stuff. but the soft keyboard on mobile linux is so dogshit that it doesn't matter -- and besides that, if you've designed an OS in the form factor of a smartphone that isn't useful or usable without an interface that is designed for a full hardware keyboard, you've fucked up bad. having the option to do stuff like open a terminal is good and should be there, but the primary way of interfacing with the phone should be graphical and not only that but it MUST be good because anything that requires a full keyboard interface will always be shit on a phone (unless we start bringing back slider keyboards, which would rule), and the GUI situation on mobile linux is just patheticalso don't even bring up that stupid pinephone case thing that turns it into essentially a mini laptop. that makes it no longer have the form factor of a phone. I get that making a slideout keyboard is way harder to do as a small company, but what they ended up with doesn't solve my problems. I'd sooner use an MNT Pocket Reform since that at least is designed around the concept of being a small laptop

@11backslashes @w @nyx Proprietary part for graphics is a theme-ish Qt library, and apps devs can choose to not use it and rely on stuff from Glacier for example. And soft keyboard, wayland compositor (lipstick), … are libre.

Yeah I got PostmarketOS and phosh on mine and the software itself is fine. My biggest gripe is no matter what I do the modem still dies in suspend from time to time and it sucks because ppl love to text me when than happens, but missed texts are stored in the modem firmware when you reboot, so its not that bad.As a phone though it works great, especially when you follow the instruction on git for tuning the open source modem firmware sdk and audio settings for calls. There is definitely a learning curve. However if you are going to compare it to consumer devices like iphones and androids your completely missing the point and lack understanding of the hardware industry. Google, Samsung and Apple respectively have poured billions of dollars into R&D to make them what they are today. The tradeoff is a simpler and limited device, but fuck big tech and their spy devices.

Yeah I prefer phosh, the UI is simple but not to obtuse. I think a tiling window manager for a phone is a bad idea.
