I recently started watching #startrek #picard s2. I had skipped it when it originally came out since I was disappointed with the ending of s1 and the reviews from the fandom were generally not good. So far... I don't hate it.

The big oversight in ep.1 was that they got this mysterious, perfectly targeted signal, and no one thought, "maybe this is a trap?" A little silly, but I can get that this is just to set the stage.Raffi is commanding a ship? Wasn't she a homeless drug addict a few episodes ago?Picard calling out Elnor during his speech, didn't care for it. Any starfleet class is going to be full of unique and outstanding students - embarrassing to just call on your buddy.

This was fun. They've done the anti-federation in several incarnations, most notably the mirror universe episodes, but also Yesterday's Enterprise and Living Witness. The concept of a (con)federation that has eliminated every last borg down to the queen, and will execute the queen in a public spectacle, is kind of great.I didn't care for the cliffhanger at the end, I was ready to move on at that point.

Ok, I get it, Raffi is sad that Elnor died. But a Starfleet commander should have a better grip on themselves.I wasn't sure about the "emotional assimilation" scene, but I think I like it. In the 90s, assimilation was a gross surgical procedure - cutting and grafting components onto a body. In the 2000s, it turned into a technological one, computer chips and nanomachnes infest your body. Now in the 2020s it is about your mental and emotional state. I think that's progress.

Did Guinan forget that she met Picard at Sam Clemens' party in the 1890s? And she got trapped in a cave with him and a disembodied android head? That seems like the kind of thing that sticks with a person - especially since it was implied that it was that encounter that led her to seek out Picard later aboard the Enterprise.I did appreciate Guinan having a rifle, she pulled out a phaser rifle on the Enterprise at least once, so it agrees with precedent.
