this is still sitting in my house. and it actually powers up just fine. they appear to have fluffed up slowly over time. i have no idea how long they've been that way. the reason i haven't thrown it out is because i need it to extract files from an APFS drive. you don't usually have extra Macs sitting around just for fun, unless you're obscenely rich.

@El_Jefe i was thinking of that. it's a bit of an old model and should frankly just be replaced. problem is that iFixIt tells you to disassemble the entire thing to replace them (something about not damaging the motherboard) and ranks the job as Difficult. i don't really need a laptop. for what i'm doing, Apple Studio or an upper range Mac Mini would be better. but too expensive. i got my hands on some cash but i'm leaning toward saving it.

@El_Jefe there MIGHT be some extra cash coming in on top of the other extra cash though. if i could get a reasonably priced replacement (such as a second-hand Mac Mini M1) and keep some cash also, that would be preferable. but with what i know i have right now, i'd have no savings left if i did that.

@kyrsjo i was unable to mount this using Linux APFS tools for some reason. there is also the issue of migrating certain documents from Apple-only apps by exporting them. it would help a lot to just fix the batteries, but that's a difficult task on this model, says iFixIt.

i'm wondering how much it would cost to pay for a battery replacement. the iFixIt guide for DIYing it was very long and full of warnings, so i'm thinking "expensive" and not worth it.

i never removed the bottom lid of a MacBook and had it go "boing" before. the whole case was warped and as each screw got undone, the lid bounced up.

@lore I don't know iComputers but that is battery chemistry failing over time.Graham from AdamantIT has done multiple videos on the topic. It is... annoying... to replace them. Not really difficult.https://www.youtube.com/@Adamant_IT/videosNo idea what a new (3rd party) battery would cost.

the MBP with the puffed-up batteries is powered on now, to run the rsync backup script i had already written for it.for some reason, even though i had configured it to run in a cron job, it never actually did this, and i apparently never remembered to check that it was working.it's not going to be a perfect backup. some file attributes will be lost as well as some protected system directories (that not even the root account can access), but stuff like documents will be preserved just fine.some things are just impossible to transfer to another OS, such as Logic Pro X projects, though.

@lore @lamp macos's code signing requirements get in the way and the lack of documented tooling makes macos just not worth it tbh. if apple gave a shit about thier core os i'd use it, but they don't and never will.

@jeff given how long this thing probably sat there with inflated batteries, it's probably going to be okay. also, by doing this, i'm discharging them and thus making them less dangerous.

@lorePerhaps, but they can also just do that with wear. Especially if they are frequently drained to empty and recharged to full. Draining to empty should just be avoided if possible. Start charging at 20-30% instead of 0% and they shouldn't fluff up like that.@Tony

@chanon @Tony the reason i say thermal stress was because the fans were running a LOT with what i was doing with it.also, there was a recall by Apple on some laptops of this model because of battery issues. i only found out years later.

@lamp i see. i never actually learned how to use Time Machine. it kind of has a weird name, as if it takes snapshots, and i figure you can't access such a backup in a normal way. i tend to use non-backup formats for my backups so i can access them easily.

moved most documents off iCloud and to my home server. they can still be accessed from macOS via the network share if i get a new Mac.there isn't a lot i can do with the office documents i made in apps like Numbers (my favourite spreadsheet app by far). they could be opened and converted to broken Excel files that look much uglier.i might just keep some of these Apple-specific files in storage, and if i should choose to get a new Mac, i can take care of it then.there isn't much battery capacity left on the puffed-up MacBook Pro, but i'm finished copying everything.

@loreAh yep, that makes sense then. I've heard some say that having laptops on their chargers 24/7 isn't good for the battery, but I've never seen it make a battery swell, so I'm not convinced it matters much.@Tony

@lore I can't remember whether macs have a similar feature, but the HP laptop I use for work allows setting a max percentage for the battery to charge to. I set that to 85 for longevity, but I could see setting a lower value being useful for safety on your machine
