A lot of people are (rightfully) upset about Red Hat change in policy, effectively locking their code changes behind a paywall. Now, here is the plot twist.Imagine Microsoft saying that Azure Linux, which is based on RHEL, will publish all their code and be available for free to everyone, and for any application, and not just their Azure clients. Before you start screaming, remember that Azure Linux (and Microsoft) is a member in good standing in many Linux institutions.Have a great day.

Is that Red Hat back pedaling? Because it feels like Red Hat back pedaling:https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/red-hats-commitment-open-source-response-gitcentosorg-changes"Despite what’s currently being said about Red Hat, we make our hard work readily accessible to non-customers. Red Hat uses and will always use an open source development model. When we find a bug or write a feature, we contribute our code upstream. This benefits everyone in the community, not just Red Hat and our customers. "

@ParadeGrotesque doesn’t red hat make money from support, documentation and other business oriented things?

@ParadeGrotesque Nah, more like fortifying their new position: "Ultimately, we do not find value in a RHEL rebuild and we are not under any obligation to make things easier for rebuilders; this is our call to make. [..] Simply rebuilding code, without adding value or changing it in any way, represents a real threat to open source companies everywhere. This is a real threat to open source, and one that has the potential to revert open source back into a hobbyist- and hackers-only activity."

@ParadeGrotesque Counterpoint:"More recently, we have determined that there isn’t value in having a downstream rebuilder."

@khm LOL - so there you have it. Goodbye, Red Hat, not that I used your products a lot.

Agree. That is precisely the difference between "open source" (embrace, extend, make proprietary)and "free software" "free as in freedom."@galaxis @ParadeGrotesque

@ParadeGrotesque ...also I think "revert open source back into a hobbyist- and hackers-only activity" really isn't the threat the author thinks it is. Especially right now, writing about it on a social network that's basically run as a hobbyist- and hackers-only activity... Never mind I got into this stuff as a kind of a countercultural movement that wanted to make a decent software platform available to everyone, outside of the confines of corporate restrictions and general profiteering...

@galaxis I agree with you!And I think, strategically speaking, this is a major blunder for Red Hat. Time will tell.
