I think people are angry about blocking Meta for the wrong reasons. Everyone is concerned about datamining or FB EEEing the protocol, but nobody is concerned about FB just making it so you have to follow their rules to federate with them and having to fill out some form to get unblocked. You know, like gmail does.https://cfenollosa.com/blog/after-self-hosting-my-email-for-twenty-three-years-i-have-thrown-in-the-towel-the-oligopoly-has-won.htmlWhat makes you think FB won't because of "hate speech" or "spam" or something. There are already people adjacent to big tech who see the fedi this way, including one group launching their own fedi instance:https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/fellow-research-decentralized-web-hate/#fediblock #fedipact

Even if they do make it that way just don’t federate with them? Fuck their forms. I just don’t see where pre emotive my defederating meta solves any of those problems. I’m personally going to wait and see what happens. I’d rather see what they are up to before just mass defederating them…Like this guy with the email hosting said, them just making it impossible to use the network is probably the biggest concern, however whether or not you block them - this is still going to happen.

@PurpCat I considered that. The majority of the fediverse is very anti-facebook, and I'm all for zuck, gargron and other pedophiles blackholing this side.

You don't understand. These people live in the alternate reality where blackholing gab forced it to defederate and not the funposters sending boomers anime girls.

Well, you’re right. 😅 I didn’t see what happened to gab. I guess I’m just going off the info I have which is only current for the last like 4 months…I’m probably ignorant 😅

@Tony @PurpCat We just need the vast majority of instances not to comply with any rules that Meta enforces while also encouraging anyone who is interested in the Fedi to use any instance other than Meta's. Meta will either be forced to drop their shitty demands or drop their instance all together.

@PurpCat yeah this could happen, question for me is, would this necessarily be bad? Like, yeah, larger instances do have more power on the network simply bc users of smaller instances want to interact with their users, which pressures instance admins and hence drives convergence to the big player's preferencesi guess i'm not sure what other options there are for being able to interact w fb-fedi users?

Is gab domain blocked a bunch of instances which forced people to either comply or not be a part of gab?

@Tony @PurpCat Another thing to keep in mind is that when Gab federated with ActivityPub, a lot of people ended up jumping ship to other instances like FSE because they realized how much of a better experience it was on there. The same could be said with Meta. And before you screech "muh normies" just remember that a lot of us on here used to be one of them before getting into things like the FOSS movement, GamerGate, or what have you.

Yah, I am just not familiar with the history. Still learning…It seems to me as long as people understand their options, if meta is too obnoxious, people will just jump ship. But again, I’m new to the history of fedi so probably wrong 😅

@Tony @PurpCat The Fedi started out with mostly FOSS enthusiasts, libertarian-learning people, and even some socialists (non-idpol types). Then Mastodon tried to brand it as it's own and called it "Twitter without the Nazis". Then, Gab refugees and later Poast brought the "far-right/third-position" culture on here (though there were a few even before then). The fedi doesn't really have a set in stone culture. You have racist anons talking about the JQ, people who like to shitpost and post porn, tech-enthusiasts, and even people who are otherwise normies, but just hate big-tech. It's just the whole blocking culture (even the racists anons will block people they disagree with) keeps everyone fragmented and stuck inside their own little bubble.

There was also Pawoo and the Japanese instances that boomed around that time bringing in JP speakers to the point they made their own homegrown instance software (Misskey)

No Gab became a 100% sioled instance like Truth Social is (using the Mastodon stack for a non-federated website).

@PurpCat@marsey.moe To me, it'll just be another fake corpo virtue signal, similar to the rainbow logos, advertising "less material" for plastic waste, and such. Maybe Facebook will only implement limited federation (which was what I've heard), so that the instances connected to Threads are not really competing in order to maintain their federation. Another possibility is that Facebook realizes just how much the Fedi hates it and either goes ham on the Fediblock or leaves. Also, this is all based on the assumption that there is no genuine interest from Facebook towards the Fediverse, not even to ruin it. It just felt like Mark was recovering from both Apple consolidating data for itself and the Metaverse functioning worse than a PS2 game, and he needed a product that will get people to temporarily overlook these mistakes. I'd even say that due to the success of Threads, the Fedi has already outgrown its usefulness for Facebook.

>Also, this is all based on the assumption that there is no genuine interest from Facebook towards the Fediverse, not even to ruin it.The idea behind Mastodon if you haven't paid attention is a "federation of allies" as opposed to the federation that exists right now outside Eugen's crew. It's not only enforced by #FediBlock hashtag users, but also more importantly it's enforced by having a CoCk that all instances need to follow to be listed on joinmastodon.org.
