Soooo.... here's a fun Fedi thing which is bad.I've been getting notifications about this conversation since it started and I have no idea why.Several people are talking about me, but seemingly nobody knows I can see this. I replied to somebody who was outlining why they don't watch my videos anymore (which - fine, but I felt they misunderstood my intention and wanted to clarify) and that caught them off guard.

@TechConnectify this would appear to be a quirk of those new decentralized reddit alternatives, lemmy and kbin. They do weird things inside the activitypub spec that mastodon may not quite handle nicely yet.

@TechConnectify Fediverse is like an email, you get notification every time once your address in the To/Cc/Bcc: field.Just mute the thread and move on, Mastodon allows muting threads from notifications only for some reason.

@TechConnectify Those are all from the more reddit-y style of fedi servers. Don't know why mastodon seems to only see the "name" field and not the "content" where you're tagged.

Only thing I can figure is that somebody tagged me in one of these posts, edited it to remove the tag, but the effect of the tagging is still in place.Or possibly this is something other than Mastodon, and Mastodon is parsing this weirdly.Whatever it is... not great.

@TechConnectify beehaw is some blogging platform, I think? On ActivityPubThis is heresy but I absolutely do not give a shit about cross-app posting, and cannot imagine a single use case where it makes sense. But SO much of the fediverse seems to want to be able to, like, reply to lemmy/kbin from Mastodon. This is nonsense, of course. You may be running up against some effect of that.

@jason that seems to be what's happening, and I gotta say that if we just accept that "as the Fediverse gets built weird things will keep happening and you don't know why"... the Fediverse is doomed.

@monorailtimes nah, I see this as distinctly different. The mere fact that I barely know what Lemmy and kbin /are/ yet things that happen there are showing up here in Mastodon without and context is... concerning.

@7666 @monorailtimes yeah, and ultimately I'm not sure if this works in a social media context.Part of being social is understanding when there's a common set of rules. The current reality feels like we're in a restaurant where everyone can hear everyone else, but only some people are aware of that.

@TechConnectify @monorailtimes Activitypub is actually a common set of rules, but people find ways to do cool things within those rules, and sometimes the ramifications of those cool things break other cool things, like what you're seeing with Mastodon and Lemmy/Kbin.There's not really a great solution that doesn't accidentally stifle said cool things from occurring, at least, not one I can think of off the top of my head. It's a big sandbox and someone's bound to toss sand around, but I'd hope that doesn't discourage people from playing in it regardless. Usually these things get fixed or accommodated eventually.

@TechConnectifyIt's just growing pains. The interoperability of different platforms through ActivityPub is an incredible feature.... Its just new. When you replied you almost certainly posted a comment in the thread on the lemmy instance and, like on Reddit, you're now receiving notifications from that conversation. Prior to this point ActivityPub has basically just been Mastodon for the mainstream and now with the Reddit shenanigans we're really seeing the first major cross platform interaction.... This is where the protocol will adjust and when the next major platform becomes popular with ActivityPub the protocol will be more ready to handle these weird cases. We are all early adopters..... I don't think that we just have to accept that it'll always be like this but we do have to expect weirdness at first.@jason

@bobkmertz @jason quite honestly, I think the desires of the people that are here now are in conflict with the needs of the general public. Most people flat out will not care to dive into these nuts and bolts. Hell, I don't really. They just want to be where the other people are.I'm leaning more and more towards the Fediverse being stuck in a nebulous phase which never coalesces into anything all that useful.I hope I'm wrong, but this is just way too much to think about.

@TechConnectifyBut you don't have to think about this stuff..... It's just the way we are wired where we want to know the answers. Most people would just completely ignore what you aren't able to (I'm the same way). The people that continually say the Fediverse will never turn into anything serious are the ones reading way deeper into things than most people would.I was on Twitter before there was an app or a web interface.... It was all SMS. This honestly reminds me of those days.@jason

@bobkmertz yeah, but twitter was *one thing*It had a single set of rules, and a culture formed around that. The fediverse, on the other hand, isn't and people actively don't want it to be. To me it feels like it's careening towards Linux distro-like fracturing - a space where very particular nerds can have things their very particular way at the expense of nobody ever being on exactly the same page.

@TechConnectifyI disagree.... People are tired of having so many accounts and subscriptions. This is all besides the fractured nature of "this person is here and this other person is over there"..... It's not ready for the wide mainstream but it's going in a direction that can provide valid solutions to those frustrations. And yes.... Twitter was one thing but it was a thing that everyone complained about without ever bothering to understand what it was accomplishing.... Only the people that used it understood it until others started seeing the value..... Of course it then many years later turned into the mess that it is now but that's what the Fediverse and ActivityPub is being designed to prevent. No one is forcing you to be here but yet you have some of the strongest interactions of anyone I follow here.1/2

@TechConnectifyI'm honestly perplexed that this conversation is going in this direction. In watching your videos (which I love and support) I would have thought you'd be the first one to understand where this is going and the solutions it's accomplishing. I don't understand why you want to keep people from having options that they would love just because you don't like them. Maybe you found an early bug that's most likely only something you found because of your huge following but, for the most part, Lemmy and other ActivityPub platforms aren't forced on anyone and no one says you have to use them.2/2

@TechConnectifyIn re-reading this I feel I need to stress that this isn't meant to be negative toward you in any way..... Sorry if you felt I came across that way. We all are looking for different things and we have different preferences, etc, and there is nothing wrong with that. I just think it's important to recognize that this isn't "just the way it'll always be" but that we are all early adopters. Just like the first to use ICQ, Twitter, and any number of things in the early days there are going to be problems. Seeing how much these platforms and protocols have already risen to the occasion gives me hope. The cross-platform nature is such a huge benefit to anyone who ever was on Facebook and had one single friend on Twitter...... Or the one person still hanging on to Myspace for years after most had left.

@bobkmertz No need to worry there, I didn't take offense or anything. To be frank, I think that a lot of what the current users of Fedi want just aren't that important to the vast majority of non-techy people who just want to do things.Maybe it is just growing pains or a bug or whatever but even just explaining to the layperson that "well, Mastodon is one platform among many in the broader Fediverse" is confusing and off-putting. We had enough confusion around instances (and still do)

@bobkmertz This just reads to me as a classic case of choice overload. It's Linux/Mac/Windows. Most people just chose Mac or Windows because they don't care all that much about this nitty-gritty, and interfacing with the people who *do* care is often... unpleasant, I'll just put it that way. Confusing if nothing else. That's honestly what I think is the gap here. Mastodon/Fedi is a great space for people who want every option conceivable - but that's not how most human brains actually function

@TechConnectify @bobkmertz I think it’s best to think of federating as a way to enable cross-platforming. It is entirely reasonable to have a Mastodon instance that does not federate and is a realm unto itself. Obviously there are certain drawbacks and advantages to this. Now think of this same concept extended to all social media. Video sharing, music promotion, microblogging, etc. Fediverse is about enabling these platforms to interact with one another on some degree and establishing protocol to do so if desired. Again this presents certain drawback and advantages. As we are still figuring all of this out there is bound to be some less-then-ideal experiences. I am a professional software developer and I know all about how edge cases come screaming into focus only after the system has been deployed and the only way to overcome them is constant refinement. That process is ongoing and I’ll admit for ActivityPub it still has quite a ways to go.I am very pleased to see you are using this platform and I hope you continue to as we endeavor towards a more perfect union.

@skotchygut I'll just leave my thoughts at this:I really admire the ideals behind this, and can see a theoretical value there. But I think it fundamentally ignores the human psychology aspect of "spaces." People need defined spaces and rules. It feels like cognitive dissonance to me to hold both "we want cross-platform functionality to enable an open social internet regardless of platform" and "but if that sounds weird you can wall it off and that's OK" in your head at the same time.

@skotchygut I will come right out and say that if new parts of the Fediverse keep bleeding into my experience on Mastodon - that's going to push me out. Some of that I'm sure is that I'm a /notable person/ (barf) but frankly I just cannot handle new corners of the internet with their own expectations, rules, and culture popping into my replies and/or feed at random. It was hard enough with factions of Twitter. Adding "also - these new platforms function completely differently" is too much.

Even just that is its own kind of annoying.Anyway, go ahead and take my thoughts for what they are: mine, with all the particular baggage that comes with.I'm just less and less sure that this space will be the... whatever it is people are hoping it to be.
