>Fall into a rabbit hole of watching car/truck youtube videos.>Every video talking about prices being insane>Trucks are selling for 80k dollars - used, with 10 to 20k mileage on themLMFAO is that shit for real? Who the fuck is walking into a dealership and dropping nearly 100k for a truck? Prices seem completely fucked in the new/used market.

@Jim It's damn true. Especially for old model trucks that doesn't have any computer shit in them. I was looking on craigslist a couple of weeks ago and some boomer was trying to sell his 92 Chevy 2500 for 80K. He actually put "no lowballs, I know what I got," in the ad.

@Jim It’s not a generic economy thing this time. The Covid disruptions never got worked through, and the used market supply is heavily dependent on the volume of new cars produced every year.Combine that with a worse economy making more people choosing to buy used instead of new, or hold on to their old cars. That gives you the expected demand surge, but in 07/08 there wasn’t a simultaneous supply problem.

@PunishedD @Jim “The Covid disruptions never got worked through” for vehicles.Because it was impossible in principle, it’s a bit rather like Obama’s “Cash for Clunkers” which required destroying the older cars; hard to find a better example of the broken windows school of economics. When “Detroit” realized COVID was real, their response was completely wrong, even historically wrong but our ruling trash has deliberately been made ignorant. In plague years, people who can flee cities for less crowded places, and in the US that means needing personal vehicles. Public transit is also fatal for a lethal respiratory pathogen. So vehicle demand went up. But they panicked and canceled supplier orders, which for chips was fatal. The ones they (mostly or entirely) use are made on old fab lines which have limited and declining capacity. So they lost their wafer reservations and other manufacturers of things that also went up in demand like for work from home snapped those up.No recovering from this mess unless they had very very significant spare factory capacity or built some, and that’s not in the cards I’m almost positive especially given how this hit their finances. So compared to normal times, unless they were willing to make unfinished vehicles and park them, they created a permanent lower number of new vehicles for a long time.(Although I don’t discount at all the desire for older vehicles which haven’t suffered the enshittification of anything vaguely recent. And now there’s a US law on backup cameras effectively makes an entertainment center a very low cost addition, while of course providing an excuse to get rid of expensive and flaky buttons, who cares if it distracts you from actually driving.)

@Squadalah_Man @Jim @PunishedD @oats “and start building stuff here instead of having it shipped in from the literal opposite side of the planet.”Unless you mean components and maybe metals, doesn’t the US manufacture a lot of vehicles? So much so the Germans and Japanese set up factories here because they were cheaper to operate than in their home countries? As for the automotive chips I was talking about, there’s lot of old fab lines still running in the US.

@oats @PunishedD @Jim In several ways, if you wanted it to be all mechanical it would have to be carburated. Mileage would go down slightly enough to incur CAFE penalties on companies, and emissions wouldn't be squeaky clean enough for the newest series of regulations. We can't even get Euro legal diesels over here.

@Squadalah_Man @Jim @PunishedD @oats Is my impression wrong that fuel injection is generally superior to carburetors, as well as having less demanding maintenance? My baseline is 1950s technology more or less vehicle technology, and there’s a bunch of genuine improvements I don’t think we want to discard, like anti-lock breaking systems (ABS).The problem was turning this up to 11, especially the emissions and fuel economy swindles. In between is things like electrical seat adjustors, which I’ve read have a big weight penalty.

@Squadalah_Man @Jim @PunishedD @oats Pretty sure you’ve flat out wrong, unless you mean a completely sourced and made in the US thing that isn’t just some hunk of metal.Going back to the field of chips I’ve watched for decades, packaging is generally done in Third World countries. Before that IBM discovered East Asians could weave core memories cheaper than their automation could do it here.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @Jim @PunishedD @oats Injection is definitely superior, but doing that all mechanical without a computer is kind of ass backwards and needlessly complicated.

@Squadalah_Man @Jim @PunishedD @oats And I’m pretty sure it doesn’t take much of a computer to handle basic engine functions like fuel injection and electronic ignition. The latter not even needing a real computer I think, 1970s electronics magazines were publishing designs for ones you could retrofit into your distributor based engine. Not sure we still make all the electronics needed for such systems, but we do make the sorts of microcontrollers you’d need, although I’m not sure about automotive grade. Those need to be able to deal with some serious environmental extremes, not all that far from generic MILSPEC electronics.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @Jim @PunishedD @oats I think with automotive electronics we hit a nice happy medium point in the late 90s. There was fuel injection, ABS, and airbags. Stuff had a decent amount of power, got decent enough mileage, and emissions were a non issue as far as health goes at that point. Vehicles from that era are still very DIY servicable, though the parts are getting scarce for most models. But of course nothing is ever good enough when the faggots in charge want you to have nothing.

@Jim @graf It's to do with components AFAIK. Specifically the semiconductors and microchips. Every car needs them these days so building them is very pricy. And you have multiple industries wanting them from a very small supplier

@Jim Yup, it's nuts right now. Even lower end trucks spiked like crazy, I bought one to use for a while, got an okay deal, nothing crazy. Doubled up when I sold it one year later, and could've gotten more if I felt like being patient. I doubled up with it being sold in about 8 hours.

@Jim @PunishedD Not so much the economy but the supply chain issue that occurred during covid. There were no new cars anywhere for months and it hadn't recovered. VW called my sister in 2021 and bought back her Jetta at close to the original price because that dealership desperately needed Jetta's. There was a high demand but they had no supply of new cars

@graf @Jim Maybe you need to figure a way of importing, I checked out Texas and Florida, there are probably more northern states as well. The linked search is just trucks just change the location around to browse the country, but plenty of cars and trucks that are 5 years old and $5k and decent mileage. If you do ever buy from a state next to the ocean, be careful as they tend to have cars that flooded, but there are plenty of decent ones.austin.craigslist.org/search/cta?auto_bodytype=7&max_auto_miles=50000&max_price=11000&min_auto_year=2013&min_price=2000#search=1~thumb~0~0

@Jim its exponentially worse for diesel trucks. practically every modern diesel pickup has retardedly complicated emissions and engine control systems combined with quality control nosediving gives u situations like the Ford Powerstroke-engined F-250/350/450s going into an artificial reduced-power mode to force you to fix your truck at a dealer out of nowhere, or the newer diesel Rams and some Chevys and Fords post-2011 having Bosch-made fuel pumps fail out of nowhere effectively bricking your truck, causing people to go out and buy older diesels even as old as the 80s just to avoid the post-2007 asinine emissions and engine control era of diesels, and due to that you get things like a 1993 F-250 with 50k miles selling for 43,000$.

@MaleGoddess @Jim Convert price in dollars to big mac menus, then compare the price of the trucks new to their used price now, but for the price new u gotta use the price of the big mac from that period in time, once you do the math if the difference in big mac menus will show for certain if this is legit inflation.
