My son's dentist office called to schedule an appointment. He asked how much it would cost and realized it would be cheaper to do it in Spain, inclusive of airfare, food and renting an apt. for a week.

@StillIRise1963 I needed to have an ultrasound while I was in Italy. I was in and out of the doctor's office in less time than it takes me to call to make an appointment in Miami. And it cost $100. That's with no insurance. I'm constantly shaking my head.

@maddad @gparenti @StillIRise1963 no kidding. I just had my tubes tied recently. The surgery was covered 100% (due to being contraceptive). Then I found out the hospital is charging me $5k, plus whatever the anesthesiologist will charge. That’s on top of the $1200/month premiums.

@StillIRise1963 @anitavondannen @kataklysm @maddad @gparenti The price difference between hospital retail billing and insurance companies negotiated prices is scary. Medicare picks up 80%. I’d be broke if not for a secondary “gap” insurance for the other 20%. That policy is up >3x in 10 years.

Meanwhile in Germany: The health minister proposes closing hospitals due to lack of staff. (Unsaid: they emigrate due to bad pay) Also, pharmacies go on strike because their funding does not allow for cost-covering operation.

Clearly, the us populace is not too stupid to understand the basics here, but the "The world will end if we socialize healthcare" can be heard over here.
