Why don't we have clothes dryers in the U.S. that need no exhaust out of buildings, windows? I'm using a dryer in Spain that collects the water in a "drawer" that you dump out. You just plug this sucker in, needs nothing else. Why do we have to live such shitty lives.☹️

@StillIRise1963 So it's more of a dehumidifier than a dryer, it just happens to have clothes in between the recirculating dried air?

@vees Hmm. Not sure how to respond to you. It dries clothes, it is a dryer. The water extracted collects in a drawer you empty.

@StillIRise1963 I looked it up, it's called a heat pump tumble dryer, as opposed to a vented tumble dryer.

@StillIRise1963 And they do seem to be available in the U.S., at roughly the same price point as vented dryers, but basically a 1:14 level of product models for ventless. Seems like you've got to know what you're looking for and want to get it https://www.lowes.com/pl/Ventless--Electric-dryers-Dryers-Washers-dryers-Appliances/4294857979?refinement=4294638608

@partnumber2 @StillIRise1963 A vented dryer is removing the moisture by pulling in dry air around the dryer, heating it, and ejecting it out the back. There's no air circulation.

@vees It's not common. I've never seen one before and can guarantee that's the case for most.

@StillIRise1963 For what's inside the units, I'd call it comparable. You'll never be able to have a heat pump assembly compete with resistive heating on unit price because the vented resistive heating assembly is just a hot wire connected to a fan.

@vees People can't afford it. It's not normal here, not provided in apartments, not a true option.

@vees @StillIRise1963 The same as a vented dryer except that the moisture, rather than being ejected out the back, is collected in the tank.It still pulls in air from outside and heats it (or not depending on the setting). There is no difference in the dryness of the clothes.

@vees @StillIRise1963 No it dries the clothes. The water from them ends up in a tank underneath which you empty. They're called condenser dryers. So handy. No steamy windows, no steamy room, no having to deal with hoses

@Cbfoley @vees @StillIRise1963 But Rob, the white guy in Maryland, USA, who's probably never even heard of this system before, much less used one, says it's more a dehumidifier than a dryer. How can Rob possibly be wrong?/s

@ricardoharvin @Cbfoley @StillIRise1963 I was asking a clarifying question because I was unfamiliar with it. I might have been born a white guy and moved to Maryland, but you chose today to be an asshole.

@LeslieBurns They do exist, but they're not a viable option for most. They're extremely expensive compared to a normal dryer, thus are not affordable or normal. @Cbfoley @vees

@StillIRise1963 @Cbfoley @LeslieBurns I agree, the federal gov't sucks at regulation especially against manufacturers and utilities with regulatory capture, and does a poor job of subsidizing better standards. States and cities do a little better (NYC ban on gas stoves in new construction, California forcing progress on car makers to sell in the state) but other than that it's short-sighted individual purchases.

@StillIRise1963 I hosted a student from France in 1993 who couldn't understand why we use dryers at all. Even in winter, she hand washed her clothes and hung them on a bathtub line. I'm wondering now if her region of France was seasonably warm all year round.

@msmmwelch @StillIRise1963 we don't have a clothes drier. We hang them up outside when the weather is good, and inside when it's not. Fortunately we have a large house!

@StillIRise1963 @Peternimmo @msmmwelch I’m so thankful for our old IKEA high-capacity, low-footprint drying rack, which we use year round in our 750 sq ft condo. But I don’t think they make it any more…?
