I know I post a lot of expensive knives, but when it comes to small/medium belt knives you really don't have to go that far. The job of a belt knife rests almost entirely on just having a decent edge and a minimum level of durability. That isn't to say you don't get what you pay for in knives, as a *good* knife is really good. And you'll know when you're holding one. But there is absolutely a law of diminishing returns in price for production knives, and it begins around the 200 dollar mark. Imo, the 50-100 price area is the ideal place for balancing cost with ability. But pictured below are all knives that all cost 30ish or less that have been perfectly usable. The three in the middle are from a budget brand called Oerla. They're chink made but American designed, iirc. But as belt knives, they're functional. Designer understood that they're going to be cheap, so they're overbuilt. Most being like just shy of 5mm thick. They also have models made of D2, but they're up in the 50$ area. (The one in the middle is a D2 model, but it's included because there's an identical one in stainless steel) I was going to include my Glock 78, as that was 30 bucks 10+ years ago when i picked it up.. But they've since bumped up to the 50$ bracket it seems. Cold steel also has usable fixed blades at the 30ish mark, including the all around liked SRK.

I will absolutely say it's better to pay more for special use tools. Or for anything that will see abuse. Never ever cheap out on those.

@confederatehobo As a expensive pointy stick enjoyer I have definitely bought more than my fair share of steel. These are by far my most used knives. Three out of four of them cost more than my first used car together but the fourth is a $25 satori asian supermarket knife. It is an absolute workhorse in my house. The only caveat is I’m kind of autistic and maintain very sharp edges so the soft shitty steel of the satori knife needs to be touched up basically every time I use. It is a great knife as long as you understand sharpening.

For the longest time, my only tools were a used CS tomahawk and a cheap Schrade clasp knife. You can absolutely make do with shit if you're good.

@confederatehobo Gun company branded knives are cheat code bc even though they are chink shit and cheap the gun company can’t have shit quality on their rep so they require decent QC and quality. The smith and Wesson ones are like 18$ on Amazon. Glock knives are too expensive now but smiths are dirt cheap for some reason
