Posted a while ago about my #unraid server running several services for me.https://emacs.ch/@louis/110377765774660677Turns out, I don't like Unraid and want to have a grown-up #GNU system instead of a proprietary Web UI.So I'm gonna erase that SSD and put something new on it to run my Git, Tailscale, file services, containers, remote #emacs and perhaps an #NNTP server (thank you @alex ...)While I'm in favour of #bookworm, I also cannot deny the hotness of #guix especially thanks to @daviwil constantly promoting it πŸ™‚ and the prospect of running the #hurd kernel. So, what will it be?You have one 1 hour before the project starts. πŸΏβ€‹

@louis @alex @daviwil Fedora Server with btrfs, and Podman+systemd for the container based services, would be my choice.

@louis@alex @daviwil There is nothing more satisfyingthan working for hours (read: weeks) on that single all-covering config and deploying it with one click. Also no shepherd sounded nice, but i didnt make the switch to guix from nix yet.#gnu #unraid #emacs #nntp #bookworm #guix #hurd

@louis I generally run my personal servers with NixOS. There’s a large number of services that can be easily configured i.e. https://search.nixos.org/options?channel=23.05&from=0&size=50&sort=relevance&type=packages&query=services.gitea and simple zfs support. That said, the Nix learning curve is real. My storage server runs Truenas Scale so, it isn’t exactly a universal preference.

@cthulhu @bkhl @chfkch @brendan Darn, I should not have started this poll πŸ˜ƒ I really hoped that Debian 12 would come out as the winner. But maybe the universe wants to send me a message. Guix it is and I will hold all of the voters responsible πŸ˜œβ€‹

@dekkzz76 @louis @cthulhu @bkhl @chfkch @brendan It is possible to run #Guix as a user on top of #Debian : https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/guixMaybe that would give you what you want.

@dekkzz76 @mpjgregoire @cthulhu @bkhl @chfkch @brendan Unfortunately, I can't even get beyond the installation menu. It reboots as soon as I choose the time zone. I also get warning that some hardware components are unsupported and that I should have chosen my hardware more carefully. πŸ˜–β€‹

@dekkzz76 No the official one. I'm one step further. I had to reset the firmware, now it is installing the binaries at least. My goal is to bring it into a state where I can log in remotely and then continue from my default workstation.

@louis ouu yeah, good luck. Embarked on the very same journey 2 weeks ago. Rocking guix system with sway on top, but it is still quite weird to me and I have soo much to learn....
