@Comrade_Courier It was 2 balls of titanium with a carbon fiber tube linking them down the middle, which sounds to me like something purposely designed to break in half.

@Aviz @Comrade_Courier Carbon Fibre is the worst material for a submarine hull ever. Literally any other material would have been a better choice.

The sub must have had some inner lining. There's no fucking way they'd drill into the hull. You'd have to be a pretty brave and stunning diversity hire to do that.

@Codeki @Aviz @Comrade_Courier I would have chosen wood, concrete or plastic before I would have chosen carbon fiber for the hull.At least those other materials warn you before they're about to fail.At least those other materials have a wealth of engineering knowledge published about them.At least they don't explode into a million piece suddenly and without warning because you got one tiny air bubble in your adhesive mixture.

Wut...First of all, they were making that hull from scratch using a filament winder. You can't take scrap CF from an aircraft, unwind it, and turn it into a new composite hull, it doesn't work that way.If he meant surplus filament then... ok but I don't see what it's "aircraft shelf-life" could be given that pure carbon is one of the most shelf stable things there is.Epoxy can absolutely go bad but when that happens it just hardens in it's tin and can't be used. So I don't think it's that either.Overall that's a very confusing statement. Kinda sounds like something that came out of the other end of a game of telephone.

Maybe, maybe not. It's a bit like drilling a dent into a diver's air cylinder. It *might* be fine or it might make the thing explode and shower everyone with shrapnel. I'm not sure I'd want to stick around and find out.

Even relatively homogenous materials like aluminium are vulnerable to this. It's just a generally bad idea to be putting dents and chips in pressure vessels.

Probably. Personally I'd have built a framework that friction fits to the interior and has plenty of threaded holes so you can just arbitrarily bolt anything you need and be reasonably sure it'll stay there.Although as you pointed out they could have an interior sleeve of some kind. They had all the materials and rig needed to make CF tubes of arbitrary sizes so why not.

I'd just build a skeleton frame that fits snuggly inside the hull. Use friction to (kind of) keep it in place.I'm available for deep sea diving vessel design, DM me OceanGate.

If they did make pvc pipe the gauge they needed then it'd be a perfect material for attaching stuff to. Although I would worry about it offgassing whatever solvent they use for vinyl with all the pressure changes.

the logitech controllers are very durable (they have to withstand a teenager throwing them across the room!) but they had multiple controllers on board anyway, it's important to have redundancies like this to prevent systemic failure.

The only good point I've seen about the controller is that they seemed to be using a wireless version, but it's possible that model has some kind of dual mode and can also be plugged in. A bit risky if not.
