be glad you never looked into the early Mastodon lore. If you did, you'd switch to Pleroma/Misskey.

@PurpCat been wondering about Akkoma tbh. For right now though, at least glitch-soc is building out some of the stuff that vanilla masto is lacking

Akkoma is a very "iffy" fork of Pleroma IMO. Namely it removes some features (like the shoutbox), but most notably the developers are notorious for breaking things Pleroma does just because they don't like the people using some feature, leading instance owners to have to try to "remove" the patches removing said features to even keep the instance going. It's a total mess compared to just running stock Pleroma. I've never been able to see anyone tell me anything good Akkoma does, and even custom emojis are now in Pleroma and the other main fork of it (Rebased/Soapbox).https://docs-develop.pleroma.social/backend/installation/debian_based_en/Install the source version, OTP is extremely dated or has been for a while.

@PurpCat @smallpatatas dont run akkomaas a person who runs it i will say PLEASE DONT USE ITpretty much upstream pleroma has become nearly indistinguishable from it (at least for the features that matter)along with that akkoma breaks too many things. chats are gone, mrfs are fucked beyond repair and amny other thingsjust use pleroma and install a recent version of the frontend from admin-fe and you will be good

Put it this way as well, of all the time I've seen the Akkoma project I have never seen the Akkoma project do anything notable to distinguish itself from Pleroma aside from custom emote reacts (which are backported into Pleroma and Soapbox thanks to popular demand). As much as Rebased (the Soapbox fork of Pleroma) is critiqued as being "gleasonware" or dumbed down for Twitter users; Rebased with Soapbox has a few things going for it. Namely, Rebased is designed to be Pleroma modified somewhat to emulate Twitter's UI while adding in other "social network" features such as events and whatnot and that is pretty much where all the design goals go with it. While politics might have had something to do with the final decision, what is not disputed is that Alex wanted to go in one direction and the Pleroma guys wanted to go in another. Akkoma has done nothing of the sort other than be talked about more in certain circles. That's it. In every way it's worse than Pleroma, and I see nothing but complaining from people who move from Pleroma to it.

@PurpCat @smallpatatas yeah akkoma seems to pretty much exist only as the result of drama iircthe main dev is a massive retard and you wont get anything out of him because he is way too full of himself to do anything decentand most of the actually unique features that akkoma has (mainly the bubble timeline) are completely pointlessI havent even used it despite setting it up

allegedly the bubble timeline might exist in stock Pleroma too in a similar fashion. I know someone who got something like that working on Rebased for sure, or at least he made modifications to have a TL of related instances for Rebased.

@PurpCat @smallpatatas yeah even then its kindof useless reallylike I get the idea behind it, like the "bubble" of instances that you frequently interact withbut even then the bigger your instance the more fragmented everything is, thus makeing the bubble tl more useless

@PurpCat @theorytoe @smallpatatas The admin of DRC said that it's much better with server load than vanilla pleroma. They switched to it after the influx of Twitter users to the Fediverse created more Mastodon instances and DRC couldn't handle all those new connections with Pleroma.

A while back there was a big scare about one of Eugen's pet projects being the infamous Eunomia project. It's dead in the water and the domain got squatted by some "slots" spambot website, but it was very notorious for being dataminers and think tank/college types trying to "fight disinfo". It thankfully didn't pan out and when Twitter got bought by Musk, the focus became Twitter without Musk. https://archive.fo/aBWVxhttps://blog.joinmastodon.org/2021/10/eunomia-public-pilot-launch/There's also the whole thing of Mastodon coming into the StatusNet network (GNU Social used this), essentially saying "I made this", and then replacing StatusNet with ActivityPub and then killing off StatusNet. While this was because StatusNet and GS were old and bit rotted, the truth is it can be perceived as an EEE thing because the old GS crowd and Mastodon's crowd had very different motivations.

So once upon a time there was this social network anyone could host that interoperated with other instances called StatusNet, renamed to GNU Social around the same time it became a GNU project (for a while being a GNU project carried some prestige). Over a few years it gains a cult following in the early-mid 2010s with a small group of nerds online, usually libertarian/free speech leaning, though there was also a socialist left segment of the network as well. This increases after Twitter ban waves and another instance releasing a frontend that mimics Twitter. Then 2016-7 comes and Eugen decides to start this new social network that's decentralized and while starting a new network from scratch would be an uphill battle, Eugen decides to latch onto the existing GNU Social network using OStatus (while also adding in ActivityPub). Mastodon gets this marketing blitz about how it's "Twitter without the Nazis" from journalists for a month or so in early 2017. https://www.vice.com/en/article/783akg/mastodon-is-like-twitter-without-nazis-so-why-are-we-not-using-itThis leads to a giant divide between Mastodon instances and the others using GNU Social, like the current one with Lemmy and the rest of the fedi or even the new Twitter refugees. Namely while the GNU Social side was mostly for free speech and similar, the Mastodon side had the Tumblr mob/NPR listener mindset of shutting down everything online. This is why a guide on Mastodon installation will tell you that you must install a blocklist as an example. But the even larger issue is that now Mastodon has become the IE6 or Chromium of the fediverse. It's the most popular fediverse instance software based solely on name recognition. It had/has so much pull over the network that what Eugen wants, Eugen can get. Instance blocking wasn't a thing before Mastodon and the Mastodon side is still the top abuser of it. On top of that, Mastodon also has increasingly lagged behind Misskey/Pleroma and even forks for features like reacts. Due to this technical and cultural difference, being on the fediverse with Pleroma and Misskey is vastly different.Aside from Mastodon instances hammering GNU Social instances (thanks to numerous factors including better hardware for Mastodon instances, more of them, and the ways the code was written), Mastodon also basically forced the rest of the fedi off of OStatus and onto ActivityPub by dropping support for the former. GS being abandoned basically also fueled the rise of Pleroma as ex GNU Social users wrote that. There's a lot more I could get into, I know a few people on shitposter.club (a former GNU Social instance around before Mastodon) know a lot more about this than I ever could because they lived it.
