Anyone can scale Mastodon in a technical manner. That is the easy part. It’s the moderation, and *one* person being in control of moderation. I intentionally brought moderators onto #Tooters way early on to help me scale what I cannot do myself…satisfying people in an objective manner.I’ve been down this road before (shout out to my PHP bulletin board peeps) and I am telling you from experience that an admin cannot be central to the control of the community. #Stux #MastoAdmin

So enough with the bullshit.Hundreds of thousands of people are joining this platform with the false assumption that large = competent. It doesn’t. Based on user experience with Zuckerberg, Musk…it’s the exact opposite. There needs to be a reversal of mstdn.social blocking a single user based on personal feelings. If personal feelings were involved I would have defederated from liberal.city, and newsie.social long before now.#MastoAdmin #Mastodon

@victor Does this really need to be in the #mastoadmin hashtag?

@NotMyBub It’s like r/sysadmin being slowly taken over by rant posts instead of actually useful discussion.

What sucks is that I would defederate you out of the picture, and people could figure out migration on their own…but I am not the one in control here. The regular people who don’t know what Sidekiq is, or give a damn about federation are what matters. I am speaking for them, and by blocking @welshpixie you are *silencing* the people who make your instance relevant in the first place.#MastoAdmin #Mastodon

@hybridhavoc @NotMyBub @victor I’ve seen these instance conflicts occur quite regularly. I think it’s important that it’s put in the open for other Admins to learn about how to not handle a conflict. As Admins we should prioritise communication with other Admins for the sake of our users. To me, this seems like the point of the Fediverse. If we can’t keep it together, how could we ask that of our users?#mastoadmin

@jens @hybridhavoc @NotMyBub Yeah I asked another admin to do the right thing, he ignored me for days, and then my users voted to defed from him. That is a perfect example of doing the right thing by my users. When I put the block I was transparent in saying that if it were up to me alone I wouldn’t.

@victor @hybridhavoc @NotMyBub I understand the reasoning behind that. But asking users is sort of like Musks “Vox populi” I think. What if your server user count doubled? Would that still be outcome?Mastodon users have a great set of tools to moderate their own experience. That’s one of the great things about Mastodon, I think. So, I’m wary about doing limitations on an instance level since it will affect all current and future users. #mastoadmin

@jens @NotMyBub @hybridhavoc @victor Victor, I understand your frustration. But, if you are the owner of that instance, you should not do something because "your users said so". You carry the full weight of responsibility. If you are uncertain or have no opinion, then votes make sense. But in this case it sounded that you did not want to block stux in the first place. There is always a way back.

@victor @hybridhavoc @NotMyBub Maybe it’s too close to parenting?Where you have others in your care where you need to be both nurturing and policing at the same time. Not always an easy balancing act. I can say from experience that it takes practice and lots of mistakes. That’s why my “server motto” is: Choose to be kind. We all make mistakes, let’s not double down on them. Every situation can’t be fair. An eye for an eye-thinking is not constructive. #mastoadmin

@louis @jens @NotMyBub @hybridhavoc when you provide a public service it’s no longer yours, it belongs to the community who resides there. Without the users it’s just a Linux node. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to block him, I would do so personally, but instance-wide is what the users wanted. So I acted on their behalf. Like I am supposed to. Meanwhile this .UK asshole is spreading misinformation, and doesn’t give a shit. Fuck that#MastoAdmin
