I like the way that you can happily load linux from UEFI directly but nobody does it because all the UEFI implementations suck

like it's nice but half the motherboards I've used can't even support more than one executable per ESP in the boot menu, let alone come with a shell so you can enter kernel args

@amberxorluci maybe they include it but the firmware has no way to access it in any board I have

@izaya you can compile (or objcopy) kernel commands in, so you don't need an EFI shell for that ^^

@dequbed oh yeah I build kernel+initrd images including the kernel args, then I sign them with my own keys for secure boot

@amberxorluci like the option in linux installers works fine but there's no way in the BIOS or boot menu to open up a shell in any of mine

@amberxorluci it's a shame too because like, wild that we have 64-bit DOS in ROM again, with built-in networking

@amberxorluci yeah that kind of sums it up huhit has a lot of neat stuff but it's also awful in almost as many wayswhen it comes down to it you use it because it supports bigger disks and doesn't require the CSM, but beyond that it's likeare you going to use secure boot properly? probably not. are you going to use the networking features? maybe, but unlikely. sane chainloading? not by choice. setting system configuration during runtime? you're more likely to brick your board.and because it's basically win32 it's kind of a pain to program for on any system other than windowsand as such operating systems use it to load the OS then ignore it as best as they can

@saphire same, but it's not exactly sane and universally applicable
