@robhughes queer also works. It can be used as a slur but so can LGBTQIA+. Some like it and some don't but the same is true for any term. I don't think I know any LGBTQIA people in real life who don't like the term queer.

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social I don't think I know any LGBTQIA people in real life who don't like the term queer.I do. It's common amongst older trans folk, and straight trans folk of all ages. Similarly, I know intersex folk who don't identify with the word queer. To me, queer is an active and proud rejection of cishetero societal norms in some form or another, and that's not the experience of all LGBTQIA folk

@ada @robhughes yeah they definitely exist, but to take offense to particularly queer people using the term is a bit queerphobic no? Like by all means correct me but there's nothing wrong with being queer, it's only an insult because people hate us.

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social Sure. I mean, I'm proudly and openly queer myself. But I'm not going to tell others they need to identify with the term

@ada @robhughes I'm just saying I'm gonna use it and I'm not gonna ask permission. If someone asks me not to call them queer then that's fine, people should self identify. Fear of that word is something that is pushed on us though, and it's quite possible and positive to reclaim the word as you know. I think people should absolutely identify with the term, we are all queer and that's good.

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social What I'm trying to say though is that we aren't all queer. Similar to the way using the word Gay as an umbrella term falls flat as a catch all, Queer falls flat too. I hesitate to use a catch all that ignores the desires of some of the people it's trying to catch

@ada @robhughes I understand that you're saying that but I disagree, we are all queer, just some of us find that term upsetting.

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social To me, queer is a claim of counter cultural identity. An active pushback against the norms that so often keep us closeted and in denial. Queer is a middle finger to all of that. Any in my experience, many LGBTQIA folk are not that. Those folk don't consider themselves queer, and I don't consider them queer either. The LGBTQIA folk that are happy to keep a low profile, and blend in, they're LGBTQIA too, but there is nothing queer about them
