Of course, you can also default to "she" if there are good reasons to think the unknown person is female.However, if you're in an extremely male-dominated space, like playing a fighting game online, there's no excuse for ever referring to your opponent as "they", that's most definitely a dude you're playing, especially if you're somewhat good at the game, and its online multiplayer involves matchmaking that pairs up people of comparable skill levels.
