GCC Adopts A Code of Conduct https://www.phoronix.com/news/GCC-Code-of-ConductI confess, I initially worried about the rise of CoCs: “is this going to be weaponized in coups against random odd ducks?”But over time, for every story I’ve heard where I thought they were misused, or at least “it’s complicated”, I’ve heard 100 stories of kicking out the asshole who made everyone’s lives a little worse.

“So you think we should kick out people for things they say somewhere else?” Well, yeah! Absolutely! If your social media goes on about members of a certain race being dumb and lazy, I don’t trust you to be fair with them at the office. “I’m different at work!” Sure, buddy.Same here. If you’re a raging bastard online, I don’t want to spend my free time working with you, even if you’re pleasant enough in our project work.

@tek i don't like them because i've seen situations where people get banned for being abusive in ways which aren't covered by the CoC. While I don't have a problem with assholes being removed, it does call into question what the point of the CoC is when you can just ban people you don't like anyways.(also I have difficulty not reading it as "cock" in my head)

@tek I get the concern about CoC being abused. We're in tech, concern about abuse of systems is beaten into us.But actual CoC abuse requires a whole string of failures in multiple parts of the organization. If an org allows that... maybe you weren't a good fit for them anyway?

@ellenor2000 I learned a couple new words in that sentence. 😀I haven't read them closely enough to have an informed opinion.

@tek Huh, by itself it's fine. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/kind-communication.en.htmlBut i've heard it used by GNU operatives as a justification to refuse to gender people correctly, if their pronouns are they/them or it/its. No such justification pops out to me from skim-reading.

@snickerbockers It's sometimes hard to kick someone out of a large, informal organization. Take something like Python. How much time and coordination would it take to say “X can't contribute here anymore” to a dozen different working groups, taking time to build consensus with each. Not that it *should* be easy, mind you. But now at least they can say “X violated this specific rule. Adios!” and move on.(I do too. I acknowledge and accept that a large part of my brain is perpetually 12.)

@mwl Yep, yep, yep. Also from tech: “yikes, we can't pick X, what if X breaks every hour!” And then a year down the road: “that problem with X happened twice, and now we have a runbook to identify and fix it quickly. Also, the good parts of X are totally worth it.”That's the kind of pattern CoCs played out with me. They seemed like they *could* be bad, and they're certainly not perfect, but I think they’ve brought way more benefit than drawback.

THAT SAID, people can and do grow. I was raised in a place and time with a lot of... peculiar... notions about people who weren't straight white Christian folks. (Not from my parents! They wouldn’t tolerate that nonsense.) I realized that's not who I wanted to be, and I work to be a better person. I bet people have clear memories of much younger me being that raging bastard, though. I hope I can be judged by the person I try to be, not the person I was long ago.

@tek I fully believe in giving people a chance, but sometimes they need to fall and learn a bit.

@GeoffWozniak I agree. And there’s a quantitative difference between “I was an idiot some decades ago” and “I said some bad stuff last month”.

@tek Yes. I did some stupid stuff in my youth and I would not do it again.I'm not going to hold it against you nearly as much if you did something dumb when you were a teen versus a 50 year old public figure, for example.

@GeoffWozniak @tek I hear you and agree. Ideally, we would all be given grace for our own stupidity as a teen. However, a Black teen is not given the same grace as a white teen.

@jai_oh @GeoffWozniak You're right, and I hate that. I try to treat all kids the way I'd hope people would treat mine, and to teach my kids to do the same.
