@Genstar gorggorg :blobcatmelt: 💗the name is a lie (it's literally just GNOME), and it sliiiiiiightly looks like OS X... but yes, Nimbus is one of my favorite themes :blobcatuwu:

@Genstar (btw, I just investigated and apparently this exact look was a thing just at the very end of life of Solaris 10 and that was it... guess that explains why I didn't recognize the taskbar)

@Genstar btw, I just investigated (and reinvestigated) and apparently this exact look was proposed back in 2007 but didn't materialize? guess that explains why I didn't recognize the taskbarhttps://blog.bengalbraith.com/2007/03/09/desktop-matters-announcing-nimbus/

@Genstar for reference, here’s what we actually got: Solaris 10 8/11 (without Nimbus) and Solaris 11 (with Nimbus, which is almost spot-on how OpenIndiana looks to this day)

@Genstar Chicago: taskbar, gradients, greys and blue bg?, Luna: start button and icons, Mac OS 9: not sure about that one? but maybe fonts and also greys, Aero: again start button lmaoI'd change Mac OS 9 for "average geocities/iespaña Linux rice", otherwise ye :blobcatderpy:

@xerz Mac OS 9 is the windows, though I might be remembering Mac OS 9 being rounder than it really is. Also, ourple.Aero is just the start button lol.

btw: Nimbus looks infinitely better with Lucida Sans, not sure why it wasn't the default since it was in the original concept art and Solaris includes it out of the box

@Genstar @xerz I like it, it looks like Windows XP but better. But since it's Java, it's probably slow as fuck.

@xerz @fell @Genstar Yeah, it's just marketing, Sun was like "everything is Java".And like it's stuff that was made back when current Sun Workstations of the time had less than 1Â GHz of CPU and around 512Â MB~1Â GB of RAM.

@xerz @Genstar Meanwhile, I remember seeing said orange-java Taskbar on my dad's computer at the time, potentially in a VM.Imagine remembering stuff you saw few times after all those years.

@xerz @Genstar I was about to research to prove you wrong, but according to a random benchmark I found from 2020 it's actually not as slow as I thought.Source: https://scribe.privacydev.net/swlh/a-performance-comparison-between-c-java-and-python-df3890545f6dThe benchmark was matrix multiplication, which shows that the JVM makes efficient use of the CPUs floating point instructions. It might be different if you test virtual function calls. Look at Python though... 🥴Still, I stand my ground, Java is not as fast as it could be, and therefore wastes resources. 😤

@xerz @Genstar I do have to acknowledge though, spending a small to medium performance overhead for absolute platform independence is a pretty good deal.

@fell @Genstar yep, and the latest versions seem to be laser-focused on performance too – myth busted :blobcatrainbow: (im case you don't know: there's also competition in the form of WebAssembly, less mature but already getting fast too and supports any language)
